Surgery for Minnie

Minnie is a lovely, 12yr old Staffordshire Bull Terrier belonging to a homeless man based in Leyton. StreetVet volunteers, vet Maria and nurse Tan met Minnie and her owner in October. Minnie’s owner was concerned about a lump that he had found on her skin. So, a biopsy was taken on the street and analysed by vet Maria. Sadly the results have revealed that the skin lump is a mast cell tumour.

Mast cell tumours (MCT) are the most common malignant skin tumours in dogs. They can range from low grade (very unlikely to spread) to high grade (highly likely to spread). The only way to treat a MCT is to remove it surgically and dogs with high grade tumours may also require chemotherapy.

We will only know the grade of Minnie’s MCT by removing it and sending it to a pathologist for analysis. So, on Thursday Minnie’s owner will be bringing her to Village Vets in Highgate where StreetVet Sam works. Minnie will have a pre-operative blood test and, if it comes back clear, she will have a general anaesthetic and her MCT will be surgically removed and sent to Nationwide Labs for analysis.

Whilst we are lucky enough to have the support of drug companies who provide us with free medication, Nationwide Labs who offered us free histopathology for this case and Village Vet who allow us to use their facilities at a significantly reduced cost, we still need you help to make up the extra costs of the surgery and to prepare for any aftercare that is required.
