TeamMED is a non-profit student run organisation that provides Monash University students with opportunities to experience and contribute to global health around the world. They have frequent trips to Nepal, India, Uganda, Tonga, and now the Philippines in order to develop infrastructure in local clinics and spread the word about health education!

Despite its beautiful landscape of lush green mountains, bordered by a blue seascape, Northern Samar is shrouded in widespread poverty. The region is the fourth poorest in the Philippines and faces constant threat from typhoons that disrupt local agriculture and thus food access, where the most common livelihoods are in farming and fishing. In addition to this, access to basic education and healthcare services are limited, with maternal mortality ratios and malnutrition rates being some of the highest in the country.

We’re doing as much as we can! TeamMED is joining hands with organisations that already work in the area such as the Ateneo Centre for Health Evidence, Action and Leadership (A-HEALS) to improve health literacy and outcomes in the region. Our health education project will focus on the prevention of prevalent respiratory diseases, and include the provision of simple at-home medical kits for parents. It will engage the children of the local nursery school in Doña Lucia and their parents in the delivery of three key messages:

In addition to preventative health education, TeamMED will also be supplying resources to the provincial hospital. Underfunded by the government budget, the Norther Samar Provincial Hospital is in dire need of basic medical supplies, such as pulse oximeters and blood pressure equipment, and funding for safer beds and new linens.

The Sacred Heart Institute for Transformative Education (SHIFT) endeavours to provide nutritious food to the underfed children of its local nursery on a weekly basis, relieving parents of some financial burden. SHIFT is aiming to increase the frequency to thrice a week, but requires your help to fund this ongoing initiative!

For only…

We here at TeamMED appreciate any help that you can give us, and we hope that you support us with our cause!
