Hello friends and family, We are reaching out on behalf of our close friends, Shelby and Patrick, who have recently had their entire world turned upside down. Earlier this year, Patrick suffered a very significant brainstem stroke, which has been devastating to himself and his family. Over a long hospital and inpatient rehabilitation stay, Patrick has had to relearn how to breathe on his own, speak, eat, walk, and many other tasks we often take for granted in our day-to-day lives. Patrick has been so extremely motivated throughout this entire journey; even going as far as to have Shelby bring in therapist friends to do additional therapy with him when the hospital he was at was unable to provide him with therapy every day. Even when Patrick was exhausted and drained, he continued to be ready and willing to work as hard as he could to make more progress. He was such a star patient that his rehab extended his stay twice, which is nearly unheard of! He is now home with Shelby and their dog, Pepper, as he continues to work hard every day. Though Patrick has made very significant progress over the past few months, he still has a long road ahead of himself. He is working very hard every single day in physical therapy, occupational therapy, and speech therapy to get back to doing all his favorite things. As you can imagine, the costs of hospital stays, therapy, medications, and follow-up care are piling up fast. On top of that, Shelby has taken time off work to be by his side and support him through this difficult journey and ensure his safety. Thus far, they have been supported by close family and friends as well as the generosity of Patrick’s firehouse team, but Patrick’s insurance is beginning to limit his access to important things like therapy services, and they will soon need to begin paying for sessions out of pocket. Patrick and Shelby both are some of the best and most determined people you’ve ever met. Shelby is a physical therapist working primarily in a children’s hospital and neuro ICU unit, and Patrick is a firefighter in Osceola County. Both are loving and generous people who do their best to help anyone they can. They are the kind of people who would never ask for help themselves—but right now, they truly need it. Any contribution, no matter how small, will go directly toward covering medical costs during this incredibly tough time. Your kindness and support mean the world. Thank you so much.
