Rukiye is my sister, 37 years old. Since she was 13, she has been battling a very rare condition called VHL syndrome, almost for as long as I’ve known her. This syndrome is an insidious disease that causes tumors of various sizes to form in multiple parts of the body, including the brain, spinal cord, brain stem, kidneys, eyes, and pancreas. For nearly 25 years, my sister has undergone numerous surgeries, four of them brain operations, and has of course received radiotherapy. Despite all these struggles and medical interventions, she still lost her ability to see and walk. If it were me, I would have given up—but she didn’t. In fact, far from giving up, she graduated from university with honors, completed her master’s degree, and became a literature teacher. Neither did my sister give up on her dreams, nor did life give up on her. She was appointed as a teacher, but because her appointment coincided with a period when her illness worsened, she could never actually start teaching. She became a teacher—but never had students. Now, for about a month, she has been in intensive care due to a lung infection. She is struggling with speaking and eating; her treatment continues. Speaking of treatment—there used to be no cure for this disease, but now there is. That means not only she, but all of us, have hope again. There is a drug called Welireg, approved by the FDA in the United States. It has started to be used worldwide for treatment purposes and has shown quite positive results. Unfortunately, this medication, which costs around $120,000, is not covered by insurance in Turkey. In other words, accessing this drug is extremely difficult for my sister. A legal process has been initiated, but no one knows how long it will take, and the treatment needs to start as soon as possible—or rather, it should have already started. My sister is now at a critical stage of her illness. And of course, she still hasn’t given up. Looking at her, we too have learned not to give up. But as you can imagine, we need help. Right now, your support, your prayers, and making sure this message reaches more people are our greatest hopes. After all these years, my sister Rukiye may regain her health, recover some of the abilities she lost, and even practice her profession. With her determination, she would certainly do it. Şimdi, yaklaşık bir aydır, akciğer iltihaplanması nedeniyle yoğun bakımda. Konuşmakta ve beslenmekte zorluk yaşıyor; tedavisi sürüyor. Tedavi demişken, eskiden bu hastalığın bir tedavisi yoktu, ama artık var. Yani artık sadece onun değil, bizim de ümidimiz var. Welireg adlı bir ilaç var, Amerika’daki FDA tarafından onaylandı. Dünya genelinde tedavi amacıyla kullanılmaya başlandı ve epey olumlu sonuçlar elde edildi. Ama ne yazık ki, maliyeti yaklaşık 120.000 dolar olan bu ilaç Türkiye’de sigorta kapsamında değil. Yani maliyeti yaklaşık 120.000 dolar olan bu ilaca ablamın ulaşması pek de kolay değil. Yasal süreç başlatılmış olsa da o sürecin ne kadar süreceğini kimse bilmiyor ve tedaviye bir an önce başlanması gerekiyor. Daha doğrusu tedaviye çoktan başlanması gerekiyordu. Ablam şimdi hastalığın kritik bir aşamasında. Hala pes etmedi tabii. Ona bakıp biz de galiba pes etmemeyi öğrendik. Ama tahmin edebileceğiniz gibi yardıma ihtiyacımız var. Şu an için, sizin desteğiniz, dualarınız ve bu mesajın daha fazla kişiye ulaşması, bizim en büyük ümidimiz.
