At the end of June, Malibu suddenly got very sick. She was in pain, lethargic, running a high fever, and even struggling to walk. We rushed her to the emergency vet, where we learned she had a large abscess (infection) that needed surgery. During that visit, we also got devastating news: Malibu has anal sac adenocarcinoma, an aggressive cancer that has already spread to her lymph nodes. The emergency vet then told us surgery to remove the infection wasn’t a good idea due to the cancer. The emergency vet didn’t think much could be done beyond keeping her comfortable. But Malibu is a fighter — and we weren’t ready to give up. ✨ A few weeks later, after seeking a second opinion, we got good news: her abscess had completely cleared. Unfortunately, the cancer was still there. We are beyond grateful for the healing thoughts and prayers from everyone who has kept Malibu in their hearts. At the end of July, Malibu started chemotherapy, and will have treatment every 3-4 weeks. Through it all, she has been such a trooper. Every vet she meets comments on how incredibly sweet she is — something we’ve always known. Malibu has touched so many lives with her love, loyalty, and gentle spirit. Her vet shared that she is still able to do therapy visits, as he could tell how happy it makes her. Even in the waiting room at the vet, she went to comfort other pet parents who were there waiting. Since finding out this news, she has spent her days surrounded by love — seeing her doggy friends, snuggling with her favorite humans, and getting spoiled more than ever.
