Hi, I’m Mason Weintz—and I’m writing on behalf of my best friend Sam. He’s not just my go-to guy for anything, sarcastic commentary, wearing the same orange fleece everyday or beating me at smash bros, he’s the soul of our friend group, and one of the most brilliant, compassionate, and quietly hilarious people I’ve ever known. Sam is only 20 and was recently diagnosed with leukemia. Those words don’t come easy. It’s been surreal and heartbreaking—for him, for his family, and for everyone lucky enough to know him. Currently, Sam is studying Physics at Virginia Tech, where he continues his tradition of making the rest of us feel like underachievers while somehow keeping us laughing. He’s very “Sheldon-like”—a quiet genius and an intellect that could probably be weaponized if he ever tried. Sam grew up in Nokesville, Virginia, attending The Nokesville K–8 School before graduating from Osbourn Park High School’s Gov school program. His incredible family—mom Kathy, dad Mark, twin sister Beth, brother Yuri, and youngest sister Julianna—has always been a humble, steady force in our community. Mark is a retired shop teacher who taught at Brentsville High School for 31 years, and Kathy is a previously inspiring English teacher for 30 years. All three of Sam’s siblings are PWCS graduates, and the whole family has attended All Saints Catholic Church in Manassas their entire lives. Honestly, if you’ve ever lived in Nokesville and haven’t crossed paths with a Smaltz, you may be living in the wrong zip code. Now here’s the part that everyone in town knows: Sam is THAT kid. The one who’s worked at practically every house. Need your grass cut, furniture moved, fence painted, weeds pulled, garage cleaned, lightbulb changed from a ladder that wobbles a little too much? Sam was there—busting the pavement with zero complaints, just his classic quiet grin. He’s never been one to seek attention, but his generosity, humor, and loyalty have always made him the center of our circle. He’s our rock, our laugh track. Now it’s our turn to show up for him. This week, Sam begins chemotherapy at Duke University Hospital in Durham, NC. His parents will be by his side, but the financial strain is already building—between medical bills, travel expenses, and trying to keep things afloat back home in Virginia while supporting him in North Carolina, it’s an incredibly heavy load. Sam’s friends and I are doing everything we can to ease the financial burden on his family so they can focus entirely on helping him heal. Every contribution whether 5$, 10$, 15$ or more—will go directly toward Sam’s care and supporting the Smaltz family during this incredibly tough time. If you’d like, please leave a message of support with your donation or share a story about Sam—we’ll make sure he sees every word. If donating isn’t possible right now, sharing this page and keeping Sam in your thoughts means the world. His fight is just beginning—and we’re behind him every step of the way. With love and deep appreciation — Mason
