I am Kari (Van Den Heuvel) Jehn, one of 8 siblings in our family. Bernie is the “baby.” Our family has decided to start this GoFundMe in hopes of getting support for Bernie and his family. Bernie was diagnosed with a heart condition in his early 20’s. Doctors have done all they could for him, but ultimately he would need to have a heart transplant in order for him to continue to live. And this is where he’s at today. He is currently waiting in the hospital for the heart. In the meantime, his wife and three children are traveling multiple times per week to see him. All three kids are also in college. Bernie and his wife are both teachers. Once the school year starts, it will be difficult for his wife to travel and Bernie will be missing most of the school year. Donations will help cover the costs of travel and health expenses. They’ll also help with deferring the cost of college expenses for the kids. Despite the family dealing with waiting for the heart, Abby has had her own health problems relating to her hydrocephalus. She’s undergone multiple surgeries over the past two years, which has made it difficult for her to work. She is currently recovering from her most recent shunt exploration surgery and will need time to recover before she can go back to school in the fall. If you know Bernie and Traci, you know they are two of the kindest, most generous people! They have raised 3 kids to be hardworking, kind, and caring. Traci has been working 2 jobs, and each of their kids has worked through high school and now college. (3 kids in college at the same time!!! $$!! Yikes!;) They have been blessed with wonderful friends and family that have sent gifts that they are so appreciative of. Many people have asked us where or what they could send to them, so we decided this may be the most helpful and beneficial to them. We are fundraising to support Bernie and his family during this challenging time. Bernie, who is awaiting a heart transplant, and his daughter Abby, who is also facing medical issues, need our help.
