The life-changing reality of a brain tumor shook Matt and Lisa Hutchinson’s world in May of 2025. The minor, yet persistent, symptoms Matt had been having finally brought them to the ER, where the doctors’ due-diligence with testing revealed a mass at the center of Matt’s brain. The medical diagnosis of Glioblastoma, Unmethylated Wild-Type has been a large pill to swallow, and Matt and Lisa have come to prefer referring to it as “Matt’s affliction.” The battles that come with this affliction have affected Matt and Lisa’s life in numerous ways. From grounding Matt from his aviation passion to relocating them to Iowa City for six weeks this Summer for treatments, life has been anything but normal for them. Anyone who is blessed to know Matt and Lisa know that they are go-getters – DIYers who do not shy away from a struggle, so they are facing these battles head-on. Their combination of skills and dreams have allowed them to build (renovate, landscape, construct) a life they love and are proud of. A significant part of their ability to provide for their family has come from the work Matt has done for the past 30+ years. While Matt’s affliction has not affected his personality or wit, the reality is that the tumor has affected his ability to work fulltime. While they navigate these new physical and mental battles, Matt and Lisa have continued to lead their family with strength and faith. They believe in the power of the Lord and trust that He is fighting alongside them. Additionally, Matt and Lisa are seeking out a variety of medical treatments to combat this affliction with as much strength and efficiency as possible. This has left them to carry a financial burden along with the mental and physical. Matt and Lisa are putting their faith first and foremost in God, the ultimate healer. They also believe in the strength and power of community and are asking for your support in this battle. If you are able, Matt and Lisa ask that you support them first by praying. On a larger scale, they are feeling called to use what they’ve learned from this experience to support others who are on healing journeys. While they decipher what that may look like, they hope to spread goodness, hope, and faith as witnesses to the love of God.
