Two days ago, my cousin’s daughter, 13-year-old Brianna Bañuelos, a high school freshman in Tucson, Arizona, was diagnosed with B-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia, an aggressive cancer of the bone marrow and blood. For at least the next month, she will be hospitalized while she undergoes bone marrow biopsies and chemotherapy. Brianna is a shy teenager who enjoys going to church with her friends, art, and fashion. Someday she hopes to be an ultrasound technician. Brianna’s mother Salma is a single mother of three, and for over a decade, she has worked as a pediatric medical assistant, helping children in underserved communities in Tucson. Brianna will require at least 9 months of treatment, and during this time, Salma will be the primary caregiver for her daughter, which will require an extended leave of absence from her work. Our family is helping as much as possible, but the loss of Salma’s income combined with the mountain of medical bills that will be coming soon is devastating. Please help Brianna and Salma wage a fair fight against the cancer and its repercussions. Funds will be used to pay medical bills and replace Salma’s lost income, keeping the family in their home until Brianna recovers and Salma can return to work. Thank you!
