Help us with Mike

Our lives changed dramatically last Saturday, our 3-and-a-half-yr-old Frenchie-pug had to have emergency spinal surgery for a ruptured disc. Mike wasn’t feeling well Friday morning, and he went from being a crazy little thing running around all over the place to suddenly losing use of his hind quarters and being unable to walk. Our primary vet diagnosed the situation as neurological, and advised us to go to an emergency vet hospital. They confirmed that Mike was suffering from a condition that our dog’s breed was genetically predisposed towards (and therefore not covered by pet insurance): he had a ruptured disc and needed surgery immediately. When you are told that your dog needs surgery to survive, your parental instincts kick in something fierce and you know you have no choice– and there is no question in your mind that you have to save your pet. People without pets find it hard to relate sometimes that your pet is your child: we can tell you that absolutely there is no way you would let your pet suffer. Mike is our heart and our happiness. You say yes to the surgery, and you think about how to pay for it later. The veterinary care we received from Dr. Ardi Powers-Davis and his team at ACCESS South Bay– who had to be called in specially on a Saturday night– has been extraordinary. They kept us extremely well informed throughout, and Mike is recovering from his surgery with all signs pointing to him making a full recovery and being able to walk again. He is to stay in hospital until Monday or Tuesday. We are now very aware that there is a long road ahead of us to fund this unexpected, sudden and enormous expense: the bill for saving Mike is $9,910.18 plus any required follow up appointments and medication.
