Help Jamaal Get to His Liver Transplant

Hi everyone,

My name is EJ, and I want to take a moment to share what’s been going on in our lives and humbly ask for your support.

If you know me, then you know my baby brother Jamaal — or as we affectionately call him, Shadow. He’s not just my brother — he’s my first child in spirit. Since February, our world has been turned upside down.

It started with subtle changes in his appearance. What we thought might be something minor quickly escalated into a life-altering diagnosis: Jamaal was experiencing severe liver issues. Things progressed at lightning speed, and after months of hospital visits, tests, and emotional strain, we recently got the call — Jamaal has officially been placed on the liver transplant list.

This is a blessing — but it comes with challenges. Jamaal’s transplant and ongoing care are being handled by the incredible team at Duke Medical Center, which means we’ll need to temporarily relocate to be near his doctors for at least a month after his surgery. The transplant could happen at any time. We won’t get much notice — just a call — and when it comes, we have to drop everything and go.

As Jamaal’s primary caretaker, I wouldn’t have it any other way. But the emotional weight of this journey has also come with a financial toll — and we’re only at the beginning. Between medical bills, travel, temporary relocation, and loss of income while I care for him, it’s been a lot to carry. And while we’re staying strong, we can’t do this alone.

To make things even more surreal, both of our parents have also faced their own major medical issues during this time. It’s been like living inside a Tyler Perry movie — only real, raw, and relentless.

This is why we’re asking — from the bottom of our hearts — for any donation you can spare. No amount is too small. Your support will go toward:

Jamaal has always been the type of person who brings calm, love, and light wherever he goes. He’s never given us a moment of trouble — always respectful, kind, and grounded. I hate seeing him go through this, but I know he’s strong. He’s ready to beat this, get healthy, and continue living a full, vibrant life.
