Story

Help Us Honor the Life of Steven Weagel
Dear friends, family, and community,
We are writing with heavy hearts to share the news that our dad, Steven Ross Weagel, passed away peacefully in hospice care in Pequot Lakes, MN, on May 28th, 2025.
Just one month before he left us, we were hit with heartbreaking news—a sudden and devastating cancer diagnosis. Everything changed so quickly. He spent a month in the hospital, and then two tender, precious weeks in hospice care before saying goodbye.
He didn’t have life insurance. There was no will. Now, along with our deep grief, we’re also navigating the unexpected weight of medical and end-of-life expenses. We’re reaching out with heavy hearts, hoping for a little support as we try to honor his memory and give him the goodbye he deserves.
About Steven
Steven was born on July 3, 1946, in Watertown, SD, and grew up in the Mankato/Lake Crystal area. He was a son, a brother, a father, a grandfather, and a partner. Steven was a man of grit and grace, artistry and strength, humor and humility.
He lived a rich, colorful life: master welder, glassblower, sculptor, trap-shooting coach, AA sponsor, community volunteer, gardener, and outdoorsman. He lived his later years with quiet pride in 37 years of sobriety, mentoring others with warmth and compassion. He gave endlessly to his community, often asking for nothing in return.
He loved blowing glass, crafting steel fish, hunting and fishing, coaching kids on the trap team, and being Grampa to his grandkids. He believed in making things with his hands and in lifting others up with his heart.
He said, “I live the dream every day.” And he meant it.
Why We’re Asking for Help
Despite all he gave to the world, Dad had no life insurance and left no estate planning. The costs of a sudden terminal illness—hospitalization, hospice care, cremation, and memorial services—are far beyond what we can manage alone.
We are seeking funds to help cover:
  • Funeral & memorial service expenses
  • Cremation and transportation costs
  • Unpaid medical bills
  • Hospice and end-of-life care
  • A urn and paperweights for his ashes
How You Can Help
If you knew Steven – if he made you laugh, taught you something, inspired your creativity, or helped you on your path – you already know what a gift he was. If you didn’t know him personally, we hope this gives you a glimpse into why his loss is felt so deeply.
Please consider donating and sharing this page to help us honor his legacy with love and dignity. No amount is too small, and every dollar goes directly toward his final arrangements.
We miss him more than words can express. Thank you for helping us carry his memory forward.
With gratitude,
Mara & Alicia (Steven’s daughters)
