A Fresh Start for Saif
Brisbane, Queensland, Australia
Saif sought asylum in Australia in 2013. He was detained on Nauru, where he and his wife Sabah had baby Saami in 2017.Sabah and Saami were transferred to Brisbane for medical attention in 2017 and have lived in the community since then. Saif was not allowed to accompany them.
Saif was transferred to Brisbane in 2019, but he was kept in Kangaroo Point Central Hotel which he was not allowed to leave. Him and the 120 other refugees detained there became known as the #KP120. And Saif became known as the man who stands on the balcony every afternoon with a sign saying “I miss my family. They are in the community.” The man who asked if he could just hug his son.
In April 2021, just after Saami’s 4th birthday, Saif was released. He finally hugged his son and wife.
