A lifeline for 3-year old Wesam – an orphaned surviver in Gaza
United Kingdom
Wesam’s story, one of too many children in Gaza, is of profound loss. On 12 August 2025, just three days before her third birthday, her universe was shattered. In one devastating moment a few hours after midnight, the only sanctuary she knew was ripped from her. Her pregnant mother, Noor, her father, Motassem, and her almost five-year-old brother, Zoheir, were all gone. Her grandfather, grandmother, great uncle, two aunts, and two cousins were also killed in the attack. Wesam was left severely injured, and to face this life without them.
Her cousins and the civil defense team pulled her family’s lifeless bodies, many no longer whole, from the rubble. They found Wesam roughly 150m outside the house, where she had been flung by the blast. She was fighting for her life with severe internal injuries to her liver and kidneys, as well as a devastating wound to her left thigh. Doctors worked tirelessly to save her life and her leg. After being intubated in the ICU for days, she woke up after her third birthday to a world she no longer knew.
Her father’s dear sister, Ayat, and her husband, Saeed, have stepped in as Wesam’s guardians. They will raise her with all the love they have and as their own daughter.
But Wesam has a very long road to recovery. She currently has a severe infection in her leg that requires regular debridement and will need extensive reconstructive surgery. With Gaza’s medical infrastructure strained beyond its limits, and basic necessities like diapers and food being scarce, this fundraiser was created to support her guardians in caring for her.
Please, help us give Wesam a chance to survive, to heal, and to know that the world has not forgotten her. Your donation, no matter the size, is a lifeline. Share her story, and surround this brave little girl with the love and support she so profoundly deserves.
21 August 2025 update
Doctors have been managing Wesam’s infection with daily debridement procedures.
She is uncomfortable and in a lot of physical and emotional pain. Processing the loss of her immediate family weighs heavily on her small shoulders and psychological support is obviously limited in Gaza’s overstreched medical infrastructure.
Wesam’s aunts are taking turns to be by her side. Her incredible nurse, Nahla, keeps a close eye on her and bought her a juice when she asked for it. She was relieved that Wesam was asking for food and drink. Nahla has also bought her diapers and some milk with donations.
We’re hoping that Wesam will be issued a referral report for treatment abroad soon, which would give her a small chance of medically evacuating for reconstructive surgery on her leg.
