On December 16th, 2023, my family, Nahida Khalil Boulos Anton and her late daughter, Samar Kamal Anton, were tragically shot by an IDF army sniper at the premises of the Holy Family Church in Gaza, a “protected” area, a place of worship.

Despite Pope Francis publicly condemning their killings and deeming them an act of terrorism, as well as their stories gaining international attention, we still struggle to navigate the administrative and financial obstacles of the system to bring our remaining families who are in danger, to safety in Australia.

In these extreme circumstances, some of our family, reluctantly, has made the difficult decision to risk their lives and flee. We had applied for visa applications under the Tourist visa scheme to bring 9 of the 37 immediate family members from Gaza to Perth, as directed by the Department, as it was the only available avenue for repatriation, but were swiftly informed that they had been declined due to the “incorrect” type of visa being requested. They now and without prior warning, are looking at a humaitarian type visa.

We are heart broken and fully aware of the fact that if they remain in Gaza, they’re likely to be killed at any moment, yet, if we remove them and bring them to safety, we are, essentially, aiding in the ethnic extermination of our people. Both prospects pain us immensely. At this point, saving their lives is our priority.

As a sponsor family, we need to cover the costs for passports, border fees, flights, and accommodation upon their arrival. The financial burden is enormous, and we are reaching out to our friends, family, and community for support.

We are applying for 37 members of our immediate family – 6 family units. There are 19 children and 18 adults that we need to fund visa application fees, passport fees, document translation, flights and more. Additionally, the family will need access to accommodation, food, medical and legal assistance when they arrive. The most pressing lot of applications is that of a cousin and his wife, 6 children and elderly mother in law, who are not able to shelter in the church with the rest of the family. He is the son and brother of our dear Nahida and Samar.

Your generous contributions will not only help us bring our families to safety but also provide immediate relief during these challenging times. We continue to advocate for an immediate and lasting ceasefire and a humanitarian crisis scheme to support all Palestinians in Gaza and the West Bank.

Any surplus funds will be donated to the Palestinian Children’s Relief Fund and El Rahman, an organisation committed to supporting Palestinians in Australia.
