Building confidence and hope with refugees via language lessons
Madrid, Community of Madrid, Spain
It costs less than £20 to connect a student to a conversation partner. It costs £122 to provide Storyteller sessions to 10 children, 5 nights a week for a year. It costs £40 to match a refugee student to a 1:1 online teacher for a minimum of 10 hours of tutoring.
Together we can make a difference. By supporting Language Linkers, your donation will make a difference, directly reaching those who need it. Language lessons are not just about language acquisition. Beyond teaching skills our volunteers offer a hand in friendship. Our lessons bring hope, trust and humanity.
With language lessons we can make a refugee’s journey a success story. When someone has had the rug pulled from beneath their feet, we help them to become an integrated, independent and integral member of a safer society. Your donation can help them stand on their own two feet again.
Refugees and asylum seekers may spend years in camps surrounded by hundreds of different mother tongues. They will need to fill in forms and cooperate with organisations in other languages. They will probably get sent to a host country with an additional language. Every step of the way, every need for food, shelter, work and education depends on language. It seems a strong statement but for some having the language they need has literally saved their life.
Most forcibly displaced people do not have the languages they need during their journey or once resettled in a host country (according to UNHCR we are talking about nearly 90,000,000,000 forcibly displaced people as of July 2022 UNHCR figures). It is not a situation they can prepare for. They have no idea where they will end up, which route they will be forced to take and how long it will take to get there. Once placed into a host country, language classes are over crowded with classes full of students with varied native languages, levels, needs, ages, cultures – backup is needed!
At the same time, there are also hundreds of language teachers wishing they could volunteer to help refugees but their family, work and life commitments stop them from being able to help. Language Linkers steps in, offering volunteers an opportunity to support refugees from home by providing online lessons that teachers and students can access from anywhere!
Language Linkers collaborates with refugee organisations to access refugees desperately needing focused 1:1 language lessons. We optimize all possible networks to recruit volunteer teachers and then by using specialized forms, questionnaires and face to face interviews, we match students to teachers. Our teachers undergo a special training to ensure they are able to give their best to students who may be under great pressure. This ensures the best possible results. These 1:1 lessons give the student a chance to practice essential language that is vital to their safety and the changes occurring in their life.
Our approaches to education are specially designed to manage the trauma and circumstances our students are facing. Our unique matching process is what makes us stand out. Both teachers and students are interviewed. A student needs analysis is created. Given the responses we are able to assess for student-teacher compatibility. It is our policy that the interviews and final pairing between student and teacher is non-digitised. The need for a very human approach is essential to safeguard and ensure the best match is made. The first lesson is a trial lesson which if goes well, results in a commitment between student and teacher to continue. The course will then be defined together. Working with our students is integral to supporting their empowerment in their learning process and in their refugee journey. Most importantly though is our teaching approach. We teach from the principle that the student must feel safe in order to learn. Our lessons are crafted to ensure the safezone is protected. This creates a basis for a really human connection and friendship which often has more value than the lesson itself. As one 18 year old student said “Thank you for treating us like humans”. The healing and rebuilding of trust that comes from the connections we build are essential to the emotional and mental wellbeing of our students.
As a non profit organisation all our funds go towards the administration and bureaucracy of keeping the organisation legitimate and legal. Funds help us ensure we fulfill all the necessary requirements of working with vulnerable adults and children (insurance, training, strict recruitment processes). As a digital organisation there are few costs, which allows us to invest any remaining funds into improving our service via digital means; creating our own platform, providing materials and paying for the mobile data that many students need for online lessons.
In 1 lesson we can develop a CV. In 5 lessons we can prepare a student for an interview. In 10 lessons we can teach basic survival language or specific language for a particular vocation. In 20 lessons we can prepare for a language certificate (often needed to get work or go into further education). In 40 lessons we can move a student up a level (CEFR). The average online language lesson (according to verbling.com) is 17euros an hour. We have recruited over 150 teachers this year. Most teachers give more than an hour a week of their skills. The net value of these services is immense!
In reality these costs are nominal in relation to the savings and the services received by our clients – the displaced people of this world.
Our students invest those lessons into their lives from the beginning. Why would you invest your hard earned money into such a worthy cause? The question is, why wouldn´t you?
