Colours of resilience: Art as a lifeline for Gaza
Canada
My name is Sayeh and I’m currently fundraising for my friend Tawfiq Jebril’s family from Gaza. Tawfiq is a talented architect and scholar who completed a PhD in architecture in China. His brother, Majed, and sister-in-law, Basma, work in public health. Their daughter Basma, is a talented young artist who specializes in pencil drawing.
Though his family has been evacuated to Cairo, Egypt, he chose to remain behind to help his community. The funds from this campaign will be used to support Tawfiq’s survival in Gaza. In addition, Tawfiq’s brother, Majed, his wife, Basma, and their children, Bana (10 years old) and Abood (8 years old), currently have no residency status in Egypt. Surviving in Cairo without a legal status is incredibly difficult, as it significantly impacts their ability to find employment and secure housing. Your donations will also help Tawfiq’s family members in Cairo get back on their feet again.
I have been in regular contact with the Jebril family and can vouch for the authenticity of their situation. Tawfiq’s niece Bana is a talented young artist. You can check out her artwork on Instagram: @banam_j014
Here is a message from Bana’s mother Basma, i.e. Tawfiq’s sister-in-law, on behalf of the Jebril family:
“We are a family of four—Majed, myself, and our two bright souls, Bana (10) and Abood (8).
Before the war, we lived a simple, happy life in Gaza. But when the genocide began, we lost everything: our home, our community, and the stability we once knew. Forced to flee to Egypt, we now face the daily struggle of rebuilding with no safety net.
Yet, even in exile, we’ve found a way to resist despair. Majed, a lifelong artist, now spends his days teaching Bana to draw—and her talent amazes us all. Together, they create poignant portraits of pro-Palestine figures, channeling their grief into art that sustains our family and honors our roots.
Why We Need Your Help:
• Basic Survival: Your donations provide food, shelter, and essentials for our children. • Aid to Gaza: We share whatever we can with loved ones still trapped under bombs. • Art as Resistance: Each sketch is an act of hope, a refusal to let our story be erased.
To Our :
Your kindness has kept us afloat in our darkest hours. Because of you, Bana’s pencils keep moving, Abood’s laughter still fills our temporary home, and we can send small comforts to those still suffering in Gaza. But we’re not out of danger yet. If you’re able, please consider donating today. Together, we can turn art into a lifeline—not just for our family, but for Gaza’s future.
