Our brother Bernie is facing the fight of his life. Earlier this summer, Bernie was diagnosed with Myelodysplastic Syndrome (MDS-IB2), a rare and aggressive bone marrow disorder that prevents the body from producing healthy blood cells. Despite countless transfusions and supportive care, his condition has quickly progressed, and he has now been diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML). AML is a fast-moving blood cancer that demands urgent and intensive treatment. Bernie’s case is even more challenging due to a TP53 mutation, which makes his disease more resistant to standard therapies. His doctors at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute in Boston have emphasized that his best chance at long-term survival is a difficult but necessary path of aggressive chemotherapy followed by a stem cell transplant. This journey will be extremely grueling both physically and emotionally. Bernie will spend extended periods in the hospital for chemotherapy, transfusions, and infection prevention. The transplant process itself requires a search for a compatible donor and months of recovery, with significant risks and the possibility of complications along the way. Through it all, Bernie continues to face each day with courage, gratitude, and remarkable resilience. He is deeply thankful for the love and support from family and friends, but he cannot walk this road alone. We are asking for your help. Donations will go directly towards Bernie’s everyday living expenses, loss of income and medical costs not fully covered by insurance.
