Our dad and brother, Danny Reitan, has just been diagnosed with stage IV metastatic prostate cancer. A PET scan confirmed that the cancer has already spread into his bones and lymph nodes. He began hormone therapy this week, and he faces chemotherapy next. Islanders know the cost of constant ferry travel adds up fast in dollars, time, and lost work. Every trip means not just medical bills, but also ferry fares, gas, meals, and hours spent on the road to reach care. On top of that, Dan doesn’t yet have health insurance, and while we are working urgently to get him covered, the bills are already piling up to nearly $15,000 just to reach a diagnosis and complete scans, before treatment even began. Even once insurance is active, he will face a large monthly premium, deductible, and high out-of-pocket maximums in addition to ongoing travel costs. This fundraiser is to cover the immediate gap before insurance begins, plus the heavy cost insurance won’t fully cover. It’s about getting him through this critical window so he can focus on treatment and healing instead of drowning in debt. For years now, Dan has worked hard, shown up daily, and committed to his health and family. It’s heartbreaking that just as he has built stability, he’s facing his toughest battle yet.
