Our dear friend Kris’ world recently changed forever with the diagnosis of LHON (leber hereditary optic neuropathy), a rare genetic eye disease. At 55, she has lost her vision completely over just eight months. In the blink of an eye, the vibrant, independent life she built has turned upside down. For more than 30 years, Kris thrived in the fast-paced world of PR and marketing. But with sudden, permanent sight loss, she is not mentally or physically able to work, and she is slowly learning how to navigate a world that looks entirely different. Think about what you did in the first few minutes of your day without thinking about it: · Made breakfast · Tossed in a load of laundry · Walked the dogs Kris has to relearn every step of a simple routine like this, and she is courageously taking on the challenge—attending intensive training programs for the visually impaired where she’s learning how to perform daily tasks most of us take for granted. · Preparing meals · Caring for her beloved dogs · Getting to and from critical medical appointments Her husband, Scott, has also had to step back a bit from work to learn these skills alongside her. The financial toll has been staggering — from the loss of income to the cost of adaptive technology, mobility training, and basic living expenses. Kris and Scott are doing everything they can. They’ve sold her car, listed their home for sale, and applied for government disability assistance. Kris doesn’t qualify for long-term disability because she lost her job just a month before her diagnosis. The needs are urgent and immediate—and they can’t do this alone.
