At the end of May, our dear friend and longtime colleague Buster received a devastating diagnosis: Stage 4 Renal Cell Carcinoma. Since then, he has undergone a series of tests and appointments locally. Unfortunately, due to the complexity of the cancer’s location and how far it has spread, his care now requires a level of specialization only found at a handful of institutions in the country. Buster has been accepted for evaluation and treatment at MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, TX—one of the nation’s leading cancer treatment facilities. His first appointment is scheduled for July 8th. He and his wife, Kimberly, will be traveling to Houston and staying in a hotel near the facility for an extended, yet currently undetermined, period. This time will include intensive testing and consultation to determine whether his kidney can be safely removed and to establish a long-term treatment plan. As you can imagine, the emotional and financial burden of travel, lodging, meals, and time away from home during such an uncertain time is significant. Buster has spent his entire adult life serving others. He began his public safety career in the 1980s and transitioned into the 911 industry in the 1990s. Since then, he’s worked across multiple states, including Virginia, where he arrived in 2004 and quickly made a name for himself as a passionate and outspoken advocate for emergency communications. He currently works in Tennessee and is well known and loved by countless people across the country. Buster served on the Virginia NENA Board from 2007 to 2010, and then on the National NENA Board from 2011 to 2016, where he also held the role of President. His contributions to the 911 profession have left a lasting impact, and he continues to be a fierce supporter of the people under the headset. Now, it’s our turn to give back. We are setting up this GoFundMe to help ease the financial strain on Buster and Kimberly during this incredibly difficult time. Whether you know him personally, worked alongside him, or simply want to support someone who has spent decades taking care of others—every donation, share, and word of encouragement makes a difference. Let’s show Buster that the 911 family—and the public safety community as a whole—has his back.
