This is Owen! He is 18 months old. He has a mommy, a daddy, three big brothers, grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends who just adore him. He is everyone’s best friend! He was not only walking, but running to keep up with his big brothers. Then one day, Mom and Dad noticed that he wasn’t putting much weight on one foot and walked with a limp. A few days after, he stopped walking. And then he stopped crawling and couldn’t move his lower body at all. During all this, he saw doctors at Primary Children’s Hospital and his pediatrician, but the cause remained a mystery. After another visit to the Primary Children’s emergency room, the doctors admitted him for testing and observation, where an MRI discovered a tumor growing next to his spine. As it grew, it gradually put pressure on his spinal cord and interrupted nerve signals to his lower body. The pathology report won’t come back for some time yet, but the team treating him believes that he has a very positive outlook. Back at home, his big brothers are getting tons of time with all those grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends. Mom and Dad are alternating nights with Owen, and his brothers come see him almost every day. All this extra travel and care gets expensive, and Mom and Dad have to spend time away from work. We would love to be able to give some money or buy food for those who are helping us so much, or gas for when they get driven out to us. We’re spending a lot on food since we aren’t able to cook at home right now. And finally, there will be the bills, which should be covered by our insurance, but there’s always something the insurance company finds a way to squirm out of paying.
