Donate Today: The Hummingbird Refugee Project Winter Appeal 2023-2024
United Kingdom
The hundreds of young people we work alongside are in crisis like we have never seen before. We are seeing huge levels of homelessness, destitution, and mental health deterioration as a result of the UK government’s hostile policies. Young people are often presenting at our youth groups without appropriate winter clothing. Many are at risk of being moved to prison-like mass accommodation sites across the country. Some are asking for tents to sleep in, distressed, as they have nowhere else to go.
As the winter chill settles in, here at Hummingbird we are reaching out to our local community for support in light of these unprecedented challenges. This winter, a combination of hostile laws, soaring living costs, and harsh weather creates difficult conditions that threaten the well-being of those we serve.
The Challenge Ahead:
This winter is projected to be exceptionally difficult for the young people we work alongside. The government is in the process of closing all the hotels that have been accommodating refugees around the country, moving many to mass accommodation sites such as the Bibby Stockholm Barge, and leaving others homeless. Coupled with the impact of harsh laws and policies, escalating expenses for necessities like food, utilities, and clothing are also disproportionately affecting their lives. At Hummingbird, we are committed to doing everything within our means to stand by these young people during these trying times.
Our Response:
In response to these challenges, we have expanded our crisis budget, dedicated to offering financial assistance and supporting the mental health and well-being of the young people in our community. Our support costs have increased by 150% in the past year. We are witnessing increasing destitution and homelessness among the young people we support, with more and more young people approaching Hummingbird telling us that they are sleeping on the streets. Our commitment to reaching out to those most in need is unwavering, but we cannot do it alone.
How You Can Make a Difference:
Your support is crucial to our mission. By contributing to The Hummingbird Refugee Project, you can help us sustain and expand our specialist support and services for young refugees in Brighton and across Sussex.
Here are some examples of how your donation can make a meaningful impact:
£10 will cover the travel expenses of a young person to or from an activity or meeting. £25 will provide crucial support to a young person facing financial hardship for one week. £50 will assist a young person left destitute. £200 will support someone in need of emergency accommodation for a few days. £500 will cover our well-being crisis budget for one month. £1,500 will support a young person in crisis for an entire year.
Additional Ways Your Donation Will Help:
Your generous donation will also contribute to winter-appropriate clothes, vouchers for those in financial crisis, top-ups for electric or gas during the colder months, travel expenses to and from our youth groups, emergency accommodation for young people at risk of homelessness, and activities that promote the well-being of the young people accessing our services.
Your Solidarity Matters:
In the face of growing hostility towards refugees, we have witnessed the implementation of severe anti-refugee laws this year, marking a significant regression in protections for those seeking refuge. However, amidst these challenges, we have also seen remarkable displays of solidarity, people power, and collective action.
We extend our heartfelt thanks to you, our , for being a crucial part of this collective effort. Your ongoing support for our organisation and the young people we serve sends a powerful message that is deeply felt by those affected by the hostile environment. Together, we can make a difference.
Donate Today:
Please consider making a donation to Hummingbird today to keep our vital services running, and stand in solidarity with local young refugees facing extraordinary challenges.
Thank you so much for your compassion and generosity. We wish all the Hummingbird community a joyous festive season, and all the best going into 2024!
