Empowering Athens refugee youth through skateboarding

The refugee crisis is far from over, and it bears a huge humanitarian responsibility for myself. I am taking a month out of work in order to support Free Movement Skateboarding in Athens, Greece. I believe that skateboarding can be transformative and bring a sense of joy, purpose and community to young displaced people which they can take with them wherever they end up. – Free Movement Skateboarding is a non-profit organisation based in Athens. There are many positive impacts skateboarding can have for your sense of self-worth and fulfilment; binding you into an inclusive community of diverse friends. Since January 2017, Free Movement have been working to establish connections with projects operating inside refugee camps, community centres, squats, the local Athenian community, and other skate charities from across the globe. They teach 8 skateboarding workshops every week, engaging 16 different nationalities, with 45% female participation over all.

Fundraising breakdown: £200: Free Movement minimum donation (Let’s top this!) £50: Materials costs for a creative workshop I will be hosting £100: Return flights to Athens £THE REST…. The rest will be donated to Free Movement to help them continue making a difference! – Additionally, please message me on instagram @sylvwits if you have any spare skateboard equipment to donate, (used or new), boards, bolts, trucks, wheels, grip, shoes, protective gear, etc….
