We have been involved in solidarity work in Palestine since 2006. In 2013, we met Mays and her family. Their courage and determination continue to inspire us. We are fundraising for essential surgery for Mays. Here is why, in her words:

“My name is Mays Noman. I’m 21 years old, and live in the West Bank, Palestine. I should be in my fourth year of medical school right now. My journey began when I was nine years old and diagnosed with osteosarcoma, an aggressive form of bone cancer. I underwent chemotherapy and surgery at Tel Hashomer Hospital (Sheba Medical Centre) in Israel, and five years later, in 2018, I had a second operation to fix a defective implant. That surgery went well, and I was hopeful for a healthy future.

However, on May 24, 2024—eight months ago—my implant broke again. Since then, I’ve been living with excruciating pain and severely limited mobility. An orthopaedic doctor in Ramallah confirmed I urgently need surgery, but I discovered that a ban prevents me from entering Israel. Even after hiring a lawyer to challenge this ban, the Israeli authorities refused to lift it, making it impossible for me to return to Tel Hashomer.

My family and I turned to several hospitals in Jordan that would have allowed me to undergo the surgery at little or no cost. Unfortunately, none of them handle the specialized implant I require. Recently, we found a private hospital in Jordan capable of performing the procedure, but they require full out-of-pocket payment—an expense my family simply cannot afford.

All these setbacks have completely disrupted my life. I’ve been forced to postpone my studies, and constant pain makes even daily tasks a struggle. Still, I remain hopeful. I want nothing more than to continue my medical education so I can one day help others who find themselves in desperate circumstances. Thank you for reading my story and for any support or guidance you can offer”.
