During a traumatic birth my beautiful niece Electra suffered catastrophic brain injury due to asphyxia. Electra was born with no sign of life but was eventually revived after 20 minutes. Doctors did not know if Electra would survive and we were told to prepare for the worst.

Electra fought and eventually began to breath on her own, and her intubation was removed. Gina and Jeff lived at the hospital for the first five months of Electra’s life, and in this time she has continued to fight and achieve huge milestones, eventually starting to ‘track’ with her eyes, and with the help of surgery, to hear her mother’s voice for the first time.

She has, however, been left with permanent brain damage, is unable to swallow and requires constant suction to clear her airways as she cannot manage her own secretions. As she cannot swallow, Electra cannot eat and is fed through a gastric tube, and will be for the forseeable future.

The extent of Electra’s brain injury and the severity of her cerebral palsy will only show itself as she grows and develops and it is the first two years of her life that are the most crucial for early intervention treatment.

Electra’s parents Gina and Jeff (my incredible sister and brother-in-law) have been doing everything in their power to give Electra access to every possible treatment that will give her the best possible chance to achieve her full potential.

One therapy treatment that Electra has responded positively to is ‘The Anat Baniel NeoroMovement method’, which uses groundbreaking therapy to “provide transformational help for children with special needs to overcome their limitations”.

Anat Baniel herself is based at her treatment centre in San Rafael, California and it is here that Gina and Jeff plan to go early next year so Electra can have this intensive treatment in her first crucial years of development.

They would also like to travel to the Stem Cell Institute in Panama for Electra to receive stem cell therapy.

As you can imagine these early intervention treatments are prohibitively expensive and Electra will need ongoing treatment and care for the rest of her life.

Any money donated will be so deeply appreciated and will literally help to change a little girl’s life, as well as helping to ease the incredible stress and trauma that burdens my sister and her family every moment of every day.

LE COMBAT D’ELECTRA

Electra, ma magnifique nièce, est née sans signe de vie. Ressuscitée 20 minutes après sa naissance traumatique, le manque d’oxygène lui a causé de graves lésions cérébrales. Les médecins ne savaient pas si Electra survivrait et il nous a été dit de nous préparer au pire.

Electra s’est battue et a réussi à finalement respirer toute seule, sans intubation. Gina et Jeff ont vécu à l’hôpital les cinq premiers mois de la vie d’Electra, et pendant ce temps, elle a continuer de se battre et de progresser dans son développement: lever la tête (semaine 5), premier cri (semaine 6), premier sourire (semaine 16), jusqu’à être capable de suivre un visage du regard, et après une intervention chirurgicale, d’entendre la voix de sa mère pour la première fois.

Cependant Electra souffre toujours de ses lésions cérébrales: elle a dû réapprendre à avaler et dégurgiter en l’absence de tous les réflexes de la bouche, des lèvres, de la langue et de la gorge. Electra a encore besoin qu’on l’aide plusieurs fois par jour à gérer ses sécrétions en les aspirant avec une machine. Comme elle ne peut toujours pas avaler sa nourriture, Electra est nourrie par un tube gastrique.

A dix mois, la sévérité du handicap d’Electra ou le diagnostique de paralysie cérébrale ne se préciseront qu’à un âge plus avancé. Les deux premières années sont cruciales pour le développement du cerveau et une fenêtre d’opportunité exceptionnelle pour toutes les thérapies dont Electra bénéficie.

Les parents d’Electra, Gina et Jeff (mon incroyable soeur et beau-frère), ont tout fait en leur pouvoir pour offrir à Electra les traitements les plus efficaces, à chaque étape de son combat, afin de lui donner toutes ses chances de rattraper son retard et d’exprimer tout son potentiel.

Une thérapie à laquelle Electra répond très bien est la méthode neuro-mouvement Anat Baniel qui aide les enfants avec des besoins spéciaux à dépasser leurs limitations pour poursuivre leur développement cognitif et moteur.

Anat Baniel travaille depuis son centre à San Rafael en Californie et c’est là que Gina et Jeff veulent installer leur famille en début d’année prochaine pour qu’Electra reçoive les traitements intensifs dont elle a besoin pour apprendre à s’asseoir, à marcher et à parler.

Il est difficile d’imaginer combien ces traitements sont coûteux, en moyenne 200 euros les 45 minutes, et leur efficacité est décuplée lors de semaines intensives (10-14 sessions de 45 minutes sur 5-7 jours), répétées toutes les deux ou trois semaines, et Electra bénéficie aussi d’autres thérapies et technologies également coûteuses, sans compter les infirmières à domicile et toutes les fournitures médicales dont elle a besoin au quotidien.

Tout don sera accepté avec la plus grande gratitude et aidera directement à changer la vie d’une petite fille pour le meilleur. Cela permettra aussi de soulager ma soeur et sa famille du traumatisme et de cet immense stress et qui pèse sur eux à chaque instant de tous les jours.
