Fighting for Life: Support Shayleen’s Cancer Journey

Hi, my name is Shayleen Quinones, and with a heavy but hopeful heart, I’m reaching out for your support as I navigate one of the most difficult chapters of my life.
This isn’t easy for me to share, as I’m usually a private person, but in December 2024, I was diagnosed with breast cancer. Since then, I’ve undergone surgery and am currently receiving chemotherapy. Radiation will follow, and I’ll continue with additional therapy once that phase is complete. The toll it has taken on my body and spirit is something I could never have prepared for, especially the relentless fatigue, the pain, the emotional weight, and the deep physical exhaustion that comes with anemia caused by the chemo.

Before all of this, I was working full-time as a Family Services Specialist in San Francisco, CA, helping connect low-income families with the resources they need to survive. I love what I do, supporting others has always given me purpose. But on May 5th, 2025, I had to stop working because my health made it impossible to continue. I pushed for as long as I could, even working remotely through the early treatments, but eventually, my body said, “no more.”

Now, I will be facing months without my regular income while continuing to fight through chemo and prepare for radiation. Even with insurance, my out-of-pocket costs are significant. The costs are piling up, medical treatments and procedures that aren’t fully covered by insurance, prescriptions, rent, utilities, groceries, etc.

I’m humbly asking for help. Your support, in any amount, will help me focus on healing without the constant fear of how I’ll make ends meet. It will give me the space to breathe, to fight, and to rebuild both my health and my peace of mind.

I’ve spent my career helping families through their toughest times, I now find myself learning to accept help and it’s one of the hardest, humblest lessons of this journey.
