George’s situation

Imagine existing but not really living. Imagine you are not allowed to work in the country you live in, but you are not able to live anywhere else. Imagine having had a successful career but for 10 years you have not been able to pursue it.

For George, this requires no imagination. This is George’s life in Newcastle. As someone who has lived in the UK for 25 years, George feels this is his home. As someone whose asylum case is seemingly never resolved, he is in a perpetual state of limbo – and the impact on his physical and mental health is serious. In 2017 he was diagnosed with PTSD.

George has not chosen to live like this. He believes he has a great deal to offer. He is a man of great honour, great humour and wide interests – he follows current events avidly and he feels strongly about the UK’s position in the world.

The problem for George is that he does not have ‘agency’: he cannot take decisions about the course of his life because everything depends on the decisions of others – permission to reside, to work etc.

George’s ambition

Given this situation, George has one ray of hope and one major ambition – to further his skills so that when eventually, as he hopes, he is given permanent leave to remain, he can quickly get a good job.

George is qualified in IT Basic Training (Newham College, 2000), and this is the area he wishes to focus on. After many years unable to work he needs to update his IT qualifications by doing ITIL Foundation.

The problem is George cannot afford the cost of the ITIL course. His weekly allowance is just £37, the cost of the course is £1800. It is an insurmountable barrier.

So he needs our support. He needs us to recognise that a life without hope of progress and change is not a life any of us would choose. George has also spent many years working in social care, mostly working with clients with conditions such as MS. He was always popular with those in his care, he went the extra mile for them, he cheered them up.

Now it is our chance to show a bit of care for George, and to cheer him up.

How we can help

Please give whatever you feel you can towards the cost of George’s professional IT qualification. He needs to raise £1800, all of which goes directly towards the cost of the course. Anything over and above this amount will go towards buying a laptop computer that George will need for the course.

Please also leave a message for George. The psychological impact of being unable to work, and feeling very alone, is almost the worst thing. Your encouragement, your understanding of what he is going through, can make a world of difference. Thank you so much.
