Tom has spent a lifetime helping others and volunteering in the community. The focus of his efforts have often been the poorest and most disenfranchised. A gentle man born in country NSW, he has the wonderful ability to treat each person with great dignity and always taking the time to hear their story. Sadly, in 2022, he was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s Dementia. His response was to volunteer for a double-blind trial at the WEHI (Walter and Eliza Hall Institute) one of Australia’s oldest medical institutes. Tom said at the time: “Even if this trial doesn’t help me, it might help someone else in the future.”
Tom is now gravely ill and in hospital after suffering a rare adverse reaction to medication. The muscles of his body seized up to the point that he was rigid. If Tom recovers and is able to go back to his home, which is his hope, he will need 24/7 nursing support for a period of time as well as other support such as physiotherapy and occupational therapy. The funds being raised are in support of that care as well as to cover the increased nursing and other costs (hire of equipment such as a hoist) incurred before Tom was diagnosed. If Tom does not recover, funds raised will also go towards covering his funeral costs.
As his health started to deteriorate following the death of beloved wife Madge, Tom has been cared for at home by his daughter Robyn for the past 6 years. Robyn has initiated this campaign, with the support of friends, to help Tom in his time of need. We understand that these times are challenging for many so any gift, small or large, is very much appreciated.
