Supporters

Salam alaikum, sweet supporters of the Brais Family. I am here to give the smallest of updates during the most dire of times for our friends.

For the Brais family who remain in Gaza– Eyad, Ghada, Hammam, and Baraa, things are relentless and unforgiving. A couple of months ago, they lost their housing and were left to survive on the street until they were able to purchase a new smaller tent for an unimagineable price. Baraa, the youngest surviving sibling, is still trying to recover from his injury, but it proves impossible under constant bombardment, evacuation orders, and malnutrition.

Mohamed remains doing the best he can in Muscat. As a genocide survivor and refugee dealing with a plethora of health issues and trauma, things are not easy. He deals with dangerously high blood pressure at times, and his back, neck, and head injuries from the bombing of his family home still plague him. School will start back up in September which means his tutoring job will, too. His family back on the strip remain without a phone and so, he’s lucky if he hears from them every couple of days, but more like once a week. In between he is holding his breath, praying for their safety, while trying to make ends meet. Any support you can offer, directly helps Eyad, Ghada, Hammam, and Baraa on the ground, and in turn helps Mohamed keep his blood pressure down, and in good health.

Something that is extrememly important to understand right now is that commission (the fee the broker takes to turn money transferred into Gaza into cash that can actually be used) is at an all time high right now at approximately 60%. This means, whatever amount is donated and sent to the Brais family will only amount to 40% of what we send for them. At the same time, the cost of living is at an all time high due to the siege and all of it’s consequences. This is an unfair reality to everyone involved and still, I must implore you to give what you can (or even can’t) a this time. The Brais family’s survival depends on it.

With deep love and endless blessings,

Mohamed and jo.

Ramadan Mubarak, everyone!

I send greetings on behalf of the family. I am happy to report that yesterday, Mohamed received our most current donation and he has sent most of it off to the family. Currently, they are without a working phone and as such, knowing how they are doing is difficult. What I do know, is that they are grateful to be receiving funds so that they can celebrate this Ramadan better than they currently are. With borders once again closed, with no timeline on when they may open, increasing the cost of living once again, please keep the Brais Family in your hearts and prayers and consider continuing to support them this Ramadan.

greetings sweet friends,

i am writing to update you on how the Brais family is doing in Gaza, and how Mohamed is doing since he evacuated to Oman.

first, as you should know, things in Gaza remain dire and scary and worsen each day. the Brais family has nearly escaped death a number of times since our last update. a number of bombings having happened too close to their tent, and it is not unusual for Mohamed and i to go days without being able to be in touch with Hammam to know how he and the rest of family are doing. with it being winter, the family is dealing with torrential rain, which causes their tent to require daily maintenance. given that food is scarce and they lack adequate access to winter clothing, this is a grueling, gargantuan, and cruel task. since aid entering the strip continues to be extremely limited, having access to proper food, winter clothing and hygeine products is basically nonexistent. as such, the family has been dealing with a vast amount of illness, including but not limited to: flu, fever, and tonsillitis. from the last sum of money i was able to send them from this campaign, we were able to buy the family a bag of flour (something extremely cost-prohibitive but a basic necessity to stave off hunger), medicine and some winter clothing.

Mohamed continues to tutor a couple of students and look for more consistent, well-paying work. at the same time, he continues to seek treatment for the head injury he got last January as well as many other health issues that have surfaced since he evacuated. in particular, he deals with excruciating stomach pain and scary-high blood pressure, all while dealing with being separated from his family and the feelings and experience that comes with that.

any amount of money you can donate makes a real, tangible difference in the Brais family’s lives and Mohamed’s. there was a moment where funds were unavailable and as a consequence, the Brais family just couldn’t eat. please know that whatever you donate makes a world of difference to them.

with so much gratitude,

Mohamed, Hammam, the rest of the Brais family, and jo.
