Zin is a Royhinga Muslim who fled targeted ethnic violence in Myanmar. He and his family are stateless in their country of origin and forced to live in terrifying conditions that prevent them being able to participate in society or practice their religion. After being deprived of the possibility of receiving an education or gaining employment and living in constant fear, Zin fled Myanmar at the age of 17.

However, instead of finding freedom and safety Zin was unlawfully detained by the Australian government. Zin was imprisoned for seven years on Nauru, his youth pointlessly squandered in prison.

In June 2020, Zin was finally approved for resettlement to the United States but with the COVID-19 pandemic ravaging the country, he is struggling to survive. Zin has managed to find work in a factory but it is poorly paid and insecure. He is at constant risk of exposure to COVID-19. When an outbreak occurs in the factory, Zin’s shifts are cancelled and he is sent home without pay.

“So far in my life I have not been able to get a good education,” he tells us. “I don’t have the resources to go to university. Training as a truck driver is an opportunity for me to get certified and achieve a stable career.”

This training will make a huge difference to Zin’s future.

Commercial truck driving licences have been a ticket to self-sufficiency and independence for dozens of Manus and Nauru refugees, but training and licence costs are a stumbling block.

The Ads-Up Refugee Network has created this fundraiser to help Zin fund the training costs for a commercial truck-driving licence. He tells us he would eventually like to start his own independent trucking business, so this may be just the beginning.

Funds donated will be held in Ads-Up’s Charity Account and used to directly pay for training costs. If this page raises more than is required to fund Zin’s training, excess funds will be reallocated to help another refugee cover training costs.
