Welcome friends. You might be here because you are in some way connected to our beautiful mate, Shanna Watson. What a lucky bunch we are. To be friends with Shan or share community with them is a bloody blessing!

Not only is Shan a dedicated friend and a loving partner, they’re also a much loved Melbourne musician – playing, recording and touring with bands like Handsome, S.M Jenkins and Grace Turner. Shan is also a committed and inspiring mentor for young female and GNC musicians with Melbourne’s YOWO program. As a respected horticulturist Shan always keeps their community in mind, relaunching their small gardening business, Hey Neighbour Gardens, in late 2020 to offer employement opportunities for the queer community and super-affordable gardening to the locals. First in line to give a helping hand but when the tables turn and help is needed, Shan hesitates to call out. That’s where we come in – a small team of Shan’s mates, keen to ease the financial stress of what is set to be an emotionally and physically challenging year ahead.

In mid-January Shan received the devasting diagnosis of early stage 3 breast cancer, with a grade 2 – 3 invasive, estrogen positive carcinoma. Shan will be undergoing a double mastectomy and fertility preservation followed by chemotherapy and potentially radiation therapy as well. This significantly debilitating process will see Shan out of action and unable to work for the next 12 months.

There are going to be significant costs for Shanna while they undergo treatment and recovery, including loss of income, continued living expenses and seeking additional health support to get their body and mind through major surgery and chemo.

Shan is ready to put up a good fight, as they said in a text message to their mates about their diagnosis – “Game on mole!” – but they’re going to need all the support they can get.

Knowing Shan would do the same for their mates and community, we are reaching out to ask you to jump on board to help Shan through this incredibly difficult time.
