Mohammed & Bayan’s Family Evacuation Fund (Gaza)
United States
Although Rafah Crossing is still closed, there are some good signs that it may be reopened fairly soon, so we’ve decided to start collecting funds for when that happens. Ya Hala (or Hala Consulting & Tourism), the Egyptian company that controls the border fee service, will likely (and unfortunately) still be charging $5000 per person to evacuate once the border opens, so for the goal of this campaign, $20,000 is for evacuating all four of them, and the $10,000 extra will go towards rebuilding their lives. This goal will of course be updated as we receive more information and donations.
“Hi, I am Mohammed from Gaza, and I would like to share my story with you. I have two children, Wael who is 3 years old and Maryam who is 2 years old. I grew up in war, and I know very well what suffering means.
Before the war broke out, we had a happy life full of love and hope. But now, this has destroyed everything we had. We lost our home, our dreams were shattered, and we live in constant fear.
I need your help to provide for my family and my children. I cannot bear to see them suffer from hunger or fear. Every donation, no matter how small, will make a huge difference in our lives. Please help me restore hope to Wael and Maryam’s hearts. A heartfelt thank you to everyone who will help us.”
Hello! I’m Nik, and I met Bayan on Instagram this past October. We started chatting on Whatsapp, and after getting some more information and meeting her family on video chat, I started raising funds for them online just for basic necessities to stay afloat and survive this situation. However, after the past months of seeing pieces of what Bayan and her family have had to go through, I decided to ask Bayan how she felt about evacuating — to my delight, she told me that she’s been thinking about it and would really like to.
As much suffering as Bayan has expressed to me, she has equally laid her dreams out in our conversations; and when talking about raising funds to evacuate, she told me, “I wish to live in a house where I sleep on a clean bed and take a hot, comfortable shower. I wish to eat good food with my children and sleep in a warm bed” (translated from Arabic). Funny, and twisted, how these are just simple normalities for a lot of us, but a dream for people in Gaza.
Bayan suffers from chronic physical health issues and pain, and her mental health has continued to decline severely due to worsening circumstances. As someone the same age as her with physical and mental disabilities myself, I can’t imagine that I could have my entire house and life destroyed, be forced to move from tent to tent, take care of two toddlers (one of whom also suffers from chronic health conditions and birth defects), be put through trial after trial just trying to make ends meet for my family, and still be standing the way she is now. She’s really strong, and all she cares about is holding things together for her kids, but so much so that she often comes crashing down. Although the strength of the Palestinian people is deeply commendable, it is not to be glorified — they should’ve never had to be strong in this way to begin with. That said, far more than just a person in Gaza who is suffering, Bayan is a talented writer, a great cook, a wonderful friend, an amazing mother and wife, and she is Palestinian. This is the case for everyone there, they are all human beings with their own stories, and rich lives and experiences. After getting to know Bayan and her family, all I want is for them to be safe and to do what I can to make that happen. We often talk about meeting one day, and she wants to cook for me (I can’t wait to try her food), so I’m also selfishly asking for you to make this come true for me.
Mohammed and Bayan’s daughter, Maryam, has asthma, a nasal hematoma extending to the brain, a congenital heart defect (hole in the heart), and more. She is without an inhaler and frequently cries in pain. She’s been in and out of the medical facilities they have left there, several times throughout all of this. Please help her get to safety and find adequate treatment. Their son, Wael, is the sweetest kid, who kept smiling, waving, and saying hi to me on our video chat. He has of course missed out on many normal childhood experiences, even unable to join the other children in school during this time because they’ve been unable to pay the monthly fee. These kids need your help.
Thank you so much <3 I've reduced the campaign goal from $30,000 to $15,000. I will make another update if I receive new information about evacuation costs, but if it remains around $5000, I wanted to add a safety net to compensate for either higher travel costs or living expenses after evacuating. After being taken to Italy, they were separated into different rooms—Bayan with Maryam in one, and Wael and Iman in the other. Doctors found that Maryam had pylmonary tuberculosis, so she was quarantined with Bayan where they were both treated with antibiotics and are doing well now. Bayan is fearful, tired, and struggling without Mohammed on top of missing her husbamd and her kids missing their father. I want to ensure their family can be reunited and safe together, so I ask that you all help me do that by donating to this campaign, and/or sharing it with your friends and family. Thank you so much. Hello everyone! There is still so much work to be done, so much to rebuild, and we have no idea what the next few days, weeks, months, or years are going to look like; but there are glimmers of hope in the light of the ceasefire agreement, and I'm so glad that there is any level of safety and peace being secured for the people of Gaza right now. Bayan and her family still plan to evacuate. After all, their home is gone, and although there will hopefully be enough aid entering Gaza now that Rafah Crossing will be opened, it's not very livable. So, as of right now, we're still going to keep raising funds for her family to start a new life somewhere else. However, if plans change, these funds will go towards rebuilding their life in Gaza. Thank you so much for all of the recent donations, it means so much. Emily Conner
