About TeamMED India:

For the past fourteen years, TeamMed has had well-established projects in India, Tonga, Nepal, Uganda and the Philippines, where we seek to supplement local capacity and address regional healthcare needs.

This year, a group of Monash Medical Students hope to provide medical support to a rural town in Tamil Nadu India named Siruvani. Our short-term goals are to see what modifications can be made to empower the community to increase access to healthcare, and decrease stigma surrounding seeking medical attention for certain conditions. The program involves providing supplies and resources to the area and providing basic healthcare with the help of local Indian hospitals.

There is a significant discrepancy between urban and rural India, stemming from fundamental inequalities at both federal and local levels. These obstacles include higher levels of unemployment, and poorer levels of sanitation, hygiene and literacy. A large area of concern is drug and alcohol addiction levels, which is becoming increasingly more prevalent among youths. Unfortunately, this is leading to poorer health outcomes for youths as young as 11 or 12, and detrimental impacts for their communities.

TeamMED India is working alongside CORD (Chinmaya Organisation for Rural Development) India to help communities create self-sustainable medical services, and increase accessibility of these facilities. Our aim is also to raise awareness around drugs, alcohol, and addiction in India. Each year, issues around excessive drinking of alcohol remain a significant challenge due to the lack of resources within India’s rural demographic.

What the money raised through the raffle will go towards

CORD has recognised the inequalities between rural and urban India and has made it their mission to facilitate meaningful change. Their model aims to motivate, mobilise and enable rural Indian communities to be self-sufficient. This instills a sense of agency, allowing rural communities to be equal partners in their own development rather than passive observers. Included in CORD’s initiatives are alcohol abuse awareness programs that work to counsel and rehabilitate young alcohol and drug addicts, thereby breaking the vicious cycle of substance abuse.

Through the help of your donations, TeamMed India will be able to work in conjunction with CORD to tackle their concerns by identifying and treating individuals battling with addiction through counselling and rehabilitation. The funds will also be used to buy essential medical supplies so that the health post can remain self-sustainable.

Success in previous years

Previously, TeamMed India visited the rural town of Himachal Pradesh, and worked closely with the community over a period of several years. Over these years we have helped establish many sustainable medical clinics, donated medical supplies, and helped create education programs to empower the community to be active forces for change in their own health and the health of others. We hope to replicate this success in December, in the new location of Tamil Nadu. Your contribution will support us in our long-term objective of further developing self-sustainable medical services, raising awareness about the importance of CORD’s mission, and increasing health awareness and accessibility in rural India.
