There are over 650 children diagnosed with cancer each year in Australia. Each of these children have not only to deal with this illness and the treatment but they also have to deal with missing out on school and school friends. Their friends too have some adjusting to do. The teacher reads the attendance every day and the students look to an empty seat. The classroom has an empty chair at an empty table and the absence is felt by all the children in the room and the teacher too.

Picture that same classroom but instead of the empty chair, there is now a life-sized, space invading monkey sitting at the desk. A monkey that will take the place of the sick child when they cannot attend school, so that they will not be missed as much and not forgotten – their space, their empty chair has been taken over by a monkey! Until they return to school.

Monkey in My Chair have provided over 250 programs to keep seriously ill children connected to school and friends and with your help we can reach out to more.

“What an amazing initiative … Coming from a mum who’s been there you really don’t realise how these packs will make a massive difference in there lives. We’ve spent a massive amount of time in LCCH oncology ward as my daughter Chelsea was diagnosed with Hodgkins Lymphoma in October last year. She is currently in remission and we pray she stays that way… She is now having to do school through distance ed as school is such an overwhelming place for someone whos lost there hair due to months of chemotherapy etc and gets constantly called a boy. Anyway just wanted you to know how important what your doing is and what a difference it makes and I thankyou ”

Let me introduce you to the program…..

The program includes:

Being forgotten is a real fear for any child, and can become all the more worrying for a sick child. This program will keep the child connected to their school and their friends, which is vital to their wellbeing, while also providing some fun, entertainment and education to the whole classroom – including the teachers.

With over 650 children diagnosed with cancer each year in Australia alone, we have a lot of work to do to give these sick children their own monkey. Each monkey costs $100 and we need as many as possible. We have previously received grants from Westpac Bank, Commonwealth Bank, Honda Corporation and some individual and corporate sponsorships. The program has gained recognition much faster than we anticipated and we have had many requests for participation in this program – we don’t ever want to say no to a sick child.

Why am I involved in this?

I decided to get involved in this project after experiencing the world of childhood cancer first hand. Seeing the impact it had on my child’s friends and the school community cannot be underestimated. It would have been great to have something like this for my son.

Diane, mother of Callum, forever 7.

Very happy to support this wonderful cause, I hope others will get on board and donate, the children need this as much as the adults in their lives. I’m certain the teachers and schools appreciate the guidance and the parents are grateful for the Monkey being so helpful.
