We’re raising funds to help establish a formal regulatory framework for Physician Associates (PAs) in New Zealand, overseen by the Medical Council of New Zealand. With current and projected healthcare workforce shortages putting immense pressure on our system, PAs offer a practical and impactful solution to improve access to care—especially in underserved and rural communities. But to make this work, we need a strong regulatory system to ensure patient safety, professional accountability, and to allow PAs to practice to their full potential.

· Launch an informational and educational campaign to introduce PAs to New Zealand, targeting the general population as well as those working in healthcare.

· Support development of the necessary regulatory framework that applies to PAs.

· Fund a licensing and oversight body within the Medical Council of New Zealand to ensure high standards.

· Implement training programs and ongoing education requirements for PAs once regulation has been accomplished.

By investing in this framework, we can safely expand New Zealand’s healthcare workforce, improve access to care, and maintain public trust in the quality of our healthcare system.

The Journey So Far In 2010, Health Workforce New Zealand launched a pilot program to test the role of PAs in our healthcare system. PAs were placed in Middlemore Hospital, where they proved to be invaluable in supporting medical and surgical teams and improving patient outcomes. This success led to a second phase from 2013 to 2015, where PAs were deployed in primary care and rural emergency medicine, addressing critical gaps in underserved areas.

In 2014, the New Zealand Physician Associate Society (NZPAS) was formed to support patient access to care, advocate for the profession including push for regulation and subsequent domestic training programs. Today, around 50 PAs are practising across New Zealand, making a real difference in general practice, urgent care, skin cancer clinics, and emergency departments.

In April of 2025, Hon Simeon Brown and Hon Shane Reti annouced “Physician Associates will become a regulated profession that will contribute to New Zealand’s talented workforce of health professionals delivering timely, quality healthcare to New Zealanders”. https://www.beehive.govt.nz/release/physician-associates-be-regulated-workforce
