On August 29th, 2018 Scotty was hit by a car while crossing the street in Evanston. Due to the accident, Scotty suffered a traumatic brain injurty and has been working towards recovery ever since. Scotty is unable to walk and do many of the things he used to do, but may be able to regain some of these skills.

The man who hit Scotty had the minimum amount of auto insurance possible. He has no money, and will be no help in providing in the aid of Scotty’s recovery. After the accident Scotty was able to use his COBRA insurance to be at the Evanston Hospital ICU, Shirley Ryan Ability Lab, and then QLI- a brain and spinal cord injury specialist in Omaha, Nebraska. After Scotty’s insurance ran out, he had to come home, and is now living with his parents. Scotty is receiving a small amount of money from Medicaid, but it does not cover many of the treatments and therapies that would be beneficial to Scotty’s recovery.

No one likes to ask for money. It’s awkward. However, the time has come for us as a family to reach out. We are hoping to raise enough money to provide Scotty with the best possible care and treatment to help him heal and get his life back! This has been a very long journey, and there’s still so far to go.

We would like to start by attempting to raise $100,000. A Special-Needs Trust has been set up in Scotty’s name, and all donations will go directly to his care. Thank you for your support on this journey.

Love,

The Smith Family

**2/22/19 UPDATE** Scotty has just completed his third week (of four) at The Aphasia Center in St. Petersburg, Florida. He has been working very hard and has shown improvement in both his speech and comprehension. We are very pleased with the center and the progress he has made in using new vocabulary to express his needs and wants. He still has a long way to go, but we are so grateful to have given him this opportunity to grow. It all helps. Thank you for your continued love and support.

We are longtime friends of Nancy and Jeff, and they told us about Scotty’s accident when we saw them in February. We hope Scotty will continue to make progress, and he will be in our thoughts and prayers.

You are more than welcome. Great job setting this up! Since I don’t have a FB account and Jeff does, I’ll see if he can get this out to the rest of the family. You ALL stay in our prayers every single day. Love you!
