Old and retired horses aren’t always put out to pasture…often they make them into dog food.Fezzie, Fudge, Popeye and Levi were all rescued from life threatening circumstances ranging from starvation, neglect or on their way to be culled. We are currently fostering them on behalf of a rescue organisation, but due to their age and conditions they’re virtually impossible to rehome. Since they can’t be ridden, buyers rarely want to invest in their proper care. This makes rehoming to a good home with the intention of keeping them alive virtually impossible – sending them back onto the market seriously puts their life at risk of ending up at the doggers who will pay for cheap horses.These are highly emotional, sensitive and social creatures who form deep connections and friendships, particularly so when they are recovering from trauma. Even when we separate them temporarily for short periods of time, they start pacing the fenceline and whinnying for each other. So you can imagine the distress for us at the thought of having to separate them permanently.
