Rescue Bilal’s Sight – A Gaza Father’s Race Against Time

My name is Walid Said, and I am fundraising for my good friend Belal and his family. He urgently needs to evacuate with his family to receive immediate treatment because he has suffered a severe eye injury, and his family is in a catastrophic situation.

My name is Belal Qassem. I’m 28 years old, a Palestinian software engineer, I have 3 brothers and 3 sisters, I’m married with a 1-year-old child named Othman. I survived the bombing, but I carry its wounds every day. The war is not over, and neither is my pain.

“Before the genocide, I used to wake up every morning and go to work with a smile. I was proud to support my family, proud to be the one holding them together. But that life is gone now.”

I was injured in a bombing, underwent several surgeries, and I’m still in desperate need of medication and pain relief. “I’ve lost 90% of my vision. Every morning I wake up and it feels like broken glass is stuck behind my eyelid. If I don’t get surgery soon, I might go completely blind.”

Since the beginning of this war 652 days ago, we have been living in fear, struggle, humiliation, and starvation.We are living under constant bombardments, airstrikes all the time, and people are killed everywhere. We have been running from shelter to shelter, nowhere is safe

On October 9, 2023, our home in Beit Hanoun was obliterated by bombs. “We didn’t have time to grab anything. We just ran—barefoot, terrified. My wife and sister held each other as our house came down on top of us.”

Since then, the ten of us are living in a tent in Gaza city with no electricity, gas, or human toilet.

We lack clean water, and food is considered a luxury if you find some. When it rains, the water comes in from everywhere. The kids cry at night, not just from fear—but from thirst. Sometimes, I can’t look them in the eyes, because I have nothing to offer them.”

My little Othman cannot have his milk and his daily needs for nutritional support, we are living in fear all the time, and we are waiting for our death every moment.

I can’t explain to you how awful is the tank’s bombs and the clashes, they are very close to us, Gaza is a very small place, nowhere to run.

“My mom can’t cook anymore. She’s too weak. My father struggles to breathe. And my little sister… she sleeps with her arms wrapped around herself, shivering. She tells me she dreams of silence—but all she hears is war.”

We didn’t ask for much from life; we just wanted to live with dignity. Now, after we’ve lost everything, we need help. We need someone to extend a helping hand, someone to help us rebuild what’s been destroyed, someone to give us a chance to start over. My father is old, my mother is exhausted, and our children need shelter, safety, and a normal life like any child in this world.

If my voice can reach you, I hope you find space in your hearts to help us. Costs of evacuation for treatment. Surgery. Feed my family and afford essential medication. Death draws closer with every passing moment. The forces are only a short distance from us, the clashes echo loudly, and the advance of the tanks can be heard clearly.

I no longer fear death itself, but I am terrified of losing a member of my family.

We have been forced to keep our bags packed, just as we have been forced to endure 22 long months of displacement, loss, hunger, and despair.

I beg you, please save my family before it is too late.

We are compelled to cover $800 for transport and $1100 to secure a tent that can shelter us all and protect our 11 children from the burning heat of summer, so we can escape to safety.

Hi everyone,

Every time I close my eyes for a moment, I see a scene that never leaves me… children lying on the ground from extreme hunger, their little bodies motionless, only weak breaths struggling to stay alive.

Today, I sat alone, unable even to lift a bottle of water because of my trembling hands… hungry, exhausted, and my heart is breaking from the pain.

My injured eye has made me even more helpless. Everything around me tells me we are nearing the edge.
