Shafiq Mohammed Memorial Fund: Essentials for New Asylum Seekers

United Kingdom

As of September 2021, new asylum seekers to the UK are quarantined in hotels for 10 days (or more). They often arrive with no information, no phones, inappropriate clothing and no shoes. Many are traumatized by what they have been through and confused by the situation they find themselves in here. They have no money to buy these basic items for themselves and these are not provided by the Home Office or Mears (the housing provider in Glasgow) as a matter of course.

Community InfoSource (CIS) is raising these funds in order to be able to provide these essentials directly to new arrivals, so that they can better orient themselves and adapt to life in a new city. As part of our outreach service, we also provide signposting and information to direct people to the services that can best support them. As many of you reading will know, the Hostile Environment means that, tragically, the struggle is not over for these people, despite what they have already been through.

Conditions in hotel and barrack accommodation for asylum seekers in the UK is notoriously poor, with little to no basic support and freedoms for people accommodated. Even when people are moved out of hotels, they must survive on less than £40 a week, in flats in frequently bad condition. There have been at least tragic 3 deaths in asylum accommodation in Glasgow alone since the start of the pandemic: Adnan Elbi, Badreddin Abdallah Adam and Mercy Baguma. On the 18th August this year, the 5 year old son of an interpreter to British Forces in Afghanistan fell to his death from an unsecured window in a hotel in Sheffield.

We must stop more tragedies like this occurring. Your donations will directly support new arrivals in hotels in Glasgow, which we will use to provide:

CIS now does this in memory of our fearless, brilliant caseworker Shafiq Mohammed, who died suddenly on Wednesday 8th September 2021. Shafiq spearheaded the outreach in hotels over the Covid-19 crisis, bringing much-needed support and advice to people in the hotels at a time when accessing any other support was extremely difficult. Shafiq had worked with asylum seekers and refugees for over 25 years. He was unyielding in his pursuit of better conditions and more rights for all. He is dearly missed and we hope that you will support us to continue this work in his memory.
