I have struggled with mental health issues for over 15 years. Earlier in 2018 I had a major breakdown, with multiple suicide attempts which resulted in hospitalisation. During my time struggling I self harmed and was left with large scars on both arms. As I slowly began to recover I felt trapped by my scars. I was very conscious of how visible they were and was constantly covering my arms. With the help of generous friends I was able to fund my own tattoo cover up. This has been life changing. I have grown in confidence, I am proud to go out with my arms on show and now I have something beautiful to look at. This has inspired me to start a new non for profit to help fund other people’s scar cover ups where they may struggle to afford it. With the support of 3 friends, one of whom has also had her own cover up, we began this new venture.

Mental health problems are on the rise, and self harm is often a by product of these struggles. We know that there we will be inundated with requests for help – within 3 days of our Facebook page launch we have already had 2 requests for help and we desperately need start up capital to help fund these cover ups and to help us purchase marketing materials to raise awareness and more funds. We can’t start our vital work without funding.

Self harm scars can be detrimental to a persons mental health. Although the scars remind us that we have survived our battles, they are also a constant reminder of the hell we have been through. Scars can restrict where people go, what they can wear and even where they can work. The freedom of these tattoos can help aid recovery and completely change people’s lives. Not only this but they can help stop people harming themselves in the future, by reminding them they have hope, and not wanting to ruin the beautiful works of art on their bodies.
