Story
We are friends of the Sonnemaker family. Their son, Emmett, who is 10 years old, has a rare neuromuscular disease called spinal muscular atrophy (SMA), a degenerative disease that causes worsening muscle weakness and wasting. Emmett and his family travel twice a month for specialist appointments several hours away. Emmett is wheelchair-bound. This summer Emmett will undergo surgery to correct severe scoliosis. After the upcoming surgery, their family vehicle, which they have been able to convert to be wheelchair accessible, will no longer be sufficient to accommodate Emmett’s height and growing stature. Their family desperately needs a new vehicle. Despite everything Emmett has been through, he remains a kind and thoughtful child, a light to everyone he interacts with. Emmett’s little sister, Ellie, also has this hereditary disease. The future of her mobility is uncertain.
Emmett’s parents are tireless supporters of their community. Their family serves willingly and is always helping others.
Every little bit helps and will make a big difference for Emmett and his family as they navigate through this journey. Please help us spread the word by sharing this with friends, family and social media.
Thank you for being part of this effort—your kindness truly matters!
Gratefully,
Mark & Heidi Schaber
