As-salamu alaykum! My name is Aiden and I have created this new campaign link & will be managing fund transfers for Omar Yasser and his family in Gaza, per his request. Previously a friend named Eshqa was preforming these tasks, but due to logistical obsticales he no longer can, though I will be leaving his words on the campaign! I want to be as transparent with you as possible, so please take the time to read this description but don’t hesitate to ask any of us questions you might have!
What is Omar’s story?
Omar is a young man from Gaza, caught, like many others, in a desperate situation. Here is his story, in his own words:
“Peace be upon you, I am Omar from Gaza. I have a family living in very difficult circumstances. The house was bombed, we returned to it but have recently been forced from it once again. My mother and father are sick and need treatment and food. We are dying here of hunger. Please support my family. One dollar may help. May God make you happy.
I was living in safety with my family of 9, we ate everything and had a house and slept comfortably in our house. The war came on October 7. We were displaced from our homes. We own nothing. We lost the house we used to live in. Now we need a tent again. We cannot get food, shelter, or clothes. We left everything behind us.
We are very tired from this harsh situation. We cannot eat. How much is a bag of flour in Gaza? 50$. A gas cylinder (for cooking) is 50$. I swear to God I am not kidding you.
Please donate to my family to provide for their needs.”
“…and the situation is difficult and things are bad, and my father needs treatment and my mother, and I have to bring treatment to my mother and father every week. I need $100 for treatment for my mother and father every week. In my time, the situation is difficult, life and precious things in the Gaza Strip are difficult, there is poverty, and the crossings are closed, everything is closed”
My Connection to Omar (Eshqa)
I’m an 18-year-old college student who feels a special connection to this case due to my own life experience. I am an Egyptian immigrant who has had to seek asylum from the current fascist dictatorship. I am especially attuned to to how Egypt directly enables and facilitates the genocide and believe that we as children of the diaspora cannot rest with this fact.
Omar is my countryman, he is my blood brother simply by the fact that he is a Palestinian. I am seperated from my sister and all of my extended family and so I talk to Omar more than I am able to talk to most of my family remebers who are mainly either sick, struggling, or have passed away. His heart is the most pure I have ever met. He constantly texts me about the intitatives he is runnning (such as Children’s Smile, a community food aid project Omar ran through support of donations like these to feed fellow Gazans, unfortunatley now closed due to lack of funding) while struggling very intensely with his own issues. Omar, like most Palestinians, defines the word selfless.
I have confirmed Omar’s identity time and time again through photos, video chats, voice messages, and more. It is important to note that many Gazans do not know people living in other countries to help them make fundraisers, and therefore have to resort to asking for help on social media. This does not automatically mean that the fundraiser is untrustworthy. These fundraisers have been, and still are, lifelines for so many families living under genocide. The least we can do is respond to their calls for help.
Why this amount of money and what will it be used for?
Omar needs to buy a proper tent again to provide shelter for his family after displacement. Unfortunately, the price is very high. It is around $1500. This is the standard price of a new tent in Gaza right now, and you will probably see a similar demand on many other fundraisers.
Omar’s father is very sick and needs medical attention. He recently had an operation on his stomach at Nasser hospital, and was receiving treatment there. Omar must also provide his father and other family memebers with food and adequate shelter.
This family needs constant support, so we have set the goal high in order to ensure he receives at least the necessary amount for his father and the tent, and hopefully more, as he has a family of 9 plus 5 others to feed and shelter. Every week on Thursday, Aiden will send the money raised from this campaign to Omar.
How will the money be transferred to Omar, and how can he use it to pay for lifesaving necessities in Gaza? What is the situation like in Khan Younis – is there even food to buy?
These are the questions everyone is asking when they click on a fundraiser. How does money get into Gaza, and how can it be used?
All the money collected for Omar will be transferred directly to him through crypto wallets, by Aiden.
Markets are still functioning in Gaza, despite the siege. In Khan Younis, it is possible to buy food, blankets, mattresses and other necessary items at the markets. We hope to update you with photos of Omar’s purchases, thanks to your generosity, God willing.
It is also quite important to note that prices have skyrocketed in Gaza, for example: 2.2 pounds (1kg) of tomatoes is about $180. So, this may effect the amount you may want to consider donating.
Here is some more information about the monetary situation in Gaza, from Rosa’s(previous campaign manager) trusted friend Ahmed in Gaza:
“There are only about 4 ATMs still working in the entire Gaza strip if not less, all for Bank of Palestine, people use cash and bank transfers to move money, other banks are still active you can send and receive money using bank app but no cash withdrawals except for Bank of Palestine, but you will have to wait for probably weeks to get in line to withdraw some limited cash (I think the limit is 500$ in one time), if you don’t want to/cant wait and you want more than just 500$ you can withdraw unlimited cash from your bank account using middleman who take big percentage as a fee (currently around 25%), so for example if you want to withdraw 1000$ from your bank account, you go to a middle man, transfer the 1000$ to him using bank mobile app, he receives the money instantly and gives you 750$ and he keeps 250$ as a fee. It’s a shadow market but no other options.”
Heed the Call and Thank You
Thank you for taking the time to read this campaign. I really hope you will consider supporting my brother. I would love to be able to live in a world in which Omar is uninhibited by the condition of genocide, but we cannot simply wait for that moment to arrive, we must support our family and comrades NOW!
