Roma youth activists and youth organizations stand in solidarity with Ukraine. We strongly condemn the Russian war against Ukraine. We are stunned about the aggression, the escalating humanitarian crisis and about the impact it has on people in Ukraine especially on Roma children and young people – on their safety, their hopes, and their lives.

The purpose of this campaign is to collect the funds to ensure that Roma children and young people have the same access to humanitarian support as the rest of the population. Find updates and reports below in the comments.

In the current situation, we as Roma youth networks and organizations continue and intensify our long cooperation with our partners and friends from Ukraine to show active solidarity and support the urgent needs of Roma children and young people.

This crowdfunding campaign is coordinated by the Ukrainian Roma youth network ARCA (Youth Agency for the Support of Roma Culture), ternYpe -International Roma Youth Network and Phiren Amenca International Network, as well as supported by the Documentation and Cultural Centre of German Sinti and Roma.

ARCA is a non-profit Roma youth organization working in Ukraine since 2018, directing its efforts towards the development of the Roma youth movement, support and preservation of Roma history and culture, as well as building cultural dialogue in Ukraine. Its mission is to change the perception and the image of the Roma community in Ukrainian society.

The funds will be used to provide food, medication, accommodation and other supplies to Roma children and youth. It will help displaced Roma youth and children to seek accommodation or reach the borders together with their family members. Transports from war zones remain crucial.

The situation is obviously dynamic and changing by the minute. Funds will be allocated as needed, according to those working on the ground. Your donation will help bridging the gap in access to services created by decades of structural discrimination that Roma youth and children face. Closing this gap now can save lives.

We chose the chuffed.org platform because its fees are much lower than those of other crowdfunding websites. As Ukraine is not a beneficiary country of the fundraising platform, ternYpe AISBL (non-profit NGO registered in 2015 in Belgium) collects the funds and distributes 100 % of the donations to our partners in Ukraine. For any questions: [email protected]

As we received feedback that some people had difficulties to donate via credit card, you may also use the option to make a direct bank transfer to the NGO bank account.

Any donations can and will help! Thank you for your support.

Natali Tomenko (co-founder of ARCA):

My cousin and her family are in Mariupol right now. We didnt have contact with them for 6 days. Yesterday, on the 7th day we managed to speak with them. They told me they are living underground with no gas, electricity, water and food and I feel so helpless. We just hope that my family will be able to survive, we hope to see them again.

We are constantly helping people who are in need, sending humanitarian need, medications and transporting people. For me one of the biggest achievements of last week was that we were able to evacuate the famous Romani poetess Raisa Nabaranchuk and her family. They are know on their way to Germany and I am very grateful to our partners in Poland and Germany who help them now.

Also about those people who managed to leave Ukraine: My extended family (three women and seven kids) from my city called me yesterday and asked for help, because they were on the polish border in a red cross shelter. These shelters are often cold and unfit for small childen. They didn’t know were to go, they have no money, no connections and dont speak the language. With our Polish and German partner organizations we could organise a safe place for them to stay.

++++ [Update 12.03.2022] ++++

Yesterday ARCA helped the famous Ukrainian poetess of Roma origin Raisa Nabaranchuk to flee with her family from Kyiv to Poland. Raisa survived World War II, but her grandmother was murdered at Babyn Yar. Once again, life forces Raisa and her family to experience all the horrors of war again.

In the last two days ARCA managed to bring a family from the heavily destroyed town of Okhtyrka to safety. The family spent 9 cold scary days and nights in the bomb shelter sick and with almost no medication and only limited access to food.

The power banks volunteers from ARCA managed to buy in the last days are now all distributed to people around the north east of Ukraine. All this processes go very slow and painfully long, when it is necessary to have them already for yesterday. Today we breathed a sigh of relief.

A short description about the current situation from Tetiana (ARCA):

A lot of energy and time is spent on communicating with people, advising, explaining and calming them in a panic. Vova is now very busy – he runs around the shops every day, trying to find goods that are vital for people in the occupied areas and have almost disappeared from the shops. So, for example, it took us 3 days to find 20 power banks, we communicated with friends and volunteers from 5 nearby cities, who also ran around the shops and tried to find what was left in them. Vova also met and accommodated 1 family in the hotel yesterday, who managed to escape from Okhtyrka. Today he will look for ways to send them further west. Transport is very limited. There are thousands of volunteers around, but there are not enough of them physically to solve all such issues.

We also communicate with dozens of Roma from different cities. We try to avoid speculation. Yesterday I asked a woman from the East if they have the opportunity to buy products in stores and if they can pay with bank cards. She answered both questions that it was impossible.

++++ [Update 07.03.2022] ++++

In just a few days, we collected over 10.000 Euros. The support that comes from all around the world is incredible. We want to thank you again for the donation, messages and support!

Together with ARCA we already give out as much support as possible. The donations are already providing support to families and communities across Ukraine, in particular to support evacuation, temporary shelter and basic supplies. We also added funds to support refugees in Moldova and Poland, where we encountered gaps in the support system and a large number of Roma in need.
