The Syrian conflict has displaced millions of people in Syria, Turkey, Lebanon and Jordan. Many of whom are seeking psychosocial support. Syrian psychologists and health workers are best placed to provide this support because they speak the language and understand the culture.
These health workers live with the same realities as the people they help. They share in the traumas that their clients bring to them. They have asked for mentoring and technical support from people outside the situation to help them keep doing this difficult work.
They told us about how they have received many short training courses, but had no opportunity for ongoing mentoring and feedback on their work. This not only makes it emotionally challenging for them to do this job, but means they may not have the chance to learn the skills to do this work safely.
We have set up a system for volunteer psychologists from Australia to provide monthly mentoring sessions to groups of Syrian psychologists and psychosocial workers over video link.
There are so many people who need help, so it is best if we can support Syrian community members to help one another. This means these skills will stay in the community in the long term. This is why we are working together with a local Syrian psychosocial organisation in Turkey called Hope Revival Organisation.
We want to set up a system which can be scaled up to reach more people in the future, so we want to make the system organised and efficient.
We are raising money to fund a person on the ground to provide direct support to health workers by coordinating a mentoring program and disseminating information to health workers across multiple countries. This will keep everyone on track, help us to measure our progress and make the project sustainable.
A part-time salary for this role is AUD$3300 per year. We would like to raise money for this role for 2 years. We also aim to support professional development for the mentors in the program.
