TeamMED is a Monash University student-run not-for-profit club that aims to encourage medical students across all year levels to become involved in medical volunteer initiatives around the world, and experience hands-on medicine in unique and challenging environments.

We currently run three overseas volunteer trips each year to Uganda, Nepal and Tonga and are involved in sourcing medical equipment and basic medicines, as well as raising funds for these disadvantaged communities.

Six medical students from Monash University in Melbourne, Victoria will set off on the 2018 Uganda trip this January. We will be travelling to the village of Lubanda, located in the Lwengo district of southwest Uganda. We have been working hard to finalise the details of the trip, and are currently fundraising in order to purchase the necessary medications and equipment required to stock the clinic at the Suubi Centre where we will be providing medical assistance, and to carry out the medical testing at this clinic.

Our local partner is an Australian not-for-profit organisation, Help Us Grow (HUG). Since 2007, HUG has worked with the Ugandan based NGO, Development Plus, to establish the Suubi Centre, a place for all members of the community to come together to take the opportunity to improve their own lives. The Suubi Centre is focused on empowering each individual, and runs a number of initiatives to help achieve this. These initiatives include livelihood projects such as a craft workshop, coffee project, and organic garden project, as well as personal development programmes such as reading classes and computer training. The centre also encompasses a secondary and vocational school. In 2011, the construction of the Suubi Community Health Centre was completed, and has since been servicing the surrounding community run entirely by local Ugandans.

Whilst in Uganda, we plan to set up a testing clinic for a range of under-treated and under-diagnosed medical conditions that are common in Uganda; including malaria, tuberculosis, HIV, brucellosis, typhoid, syphilis, hypertension and diabetes. Patients that test positive for any of these conditions will then be referred to the clinic for treatment. We will also be assisting the Suubi Community Health Centre staff in any way that we can throughout our stay.

In addition to our testing and work with the clinic, we endeavour to run a health promotion campaign with the community. The exact message of the campaign is yet to be decided and will depend on the funds available, but ideas for this year’s campaign include oral health and hand hygiene.

100% of the donations will go towards buying the supplies needed to run the medical clinics and perform the testing for diseases. This includes medications such as antibiotics and paracetamol, and equipment used for testing such as glass slides, stains used to test for malaria, HIV testing kits, and glucose test strips used to test for diabetes. Along with this, we are also hoping to purchase equipment such as machines to monitor treatment in HIV positive patients and dental equipment to leave at the Suubi Centre.

None of the money raised will be used to pay for any personal travel expenses; all of the students have funded their own flights, accommodation, food and other personal costs.

Whether you can afford to donate a lot or a little, we are incredibly grateful for your contribution.
