This is a rare opportunity for you to genuinely and practically change an entire family’s future for the better.

When we hear about the Syrian crisis it’s easy to be overwhelmed. But rather than switch off, it’s important to remember that small, incremental gestures by just a few people can make huge, life-changing differences.

Your donations will pay for travel to bring a refugee family from Syria to Australia to be with their dad, escaping the dangers of Syria and giving them a new life.

⭐ BACKGROUND ⭐

In 2019 thanks to the love and generosity of the Australian community we were able to raise a significant sum of money to pay for visa applications for the family of Iyad, a Syrian refugee in Canberra, to join him in Australia (you can read the whole story below).

After a long and torturous wait the family has finally received the news that they have been granted permanent residency to live in Australia with their dad!

We’ve done the hard part – now we just need to get them here! We can do this!

Iyad’s five beautiful children Mohamad (age 14), Hamza (age 11), Reem (age 6), Rahaf (age 4), Sham (age 3) have been granted permanent residency to live in Australia. This is particularly exciting because it means Iyad is going to be meeting little Sham for the first time.

⭐ HOW YOU CAN HELP ⭐

The hard part has been done, but we still have one final obstacle: getting Ghada and the kids from Syria to Australian as soon as possible. A difficult and expensive task at the best, this has been made more complicated by the coronavirus pandemic.

We’re so close to getting them here, but we need to raise the money for travel which is where you come in.

We have been quoted $35000 for flights from Lebanon to Sydney. This is where the bulk of the money is needed. Then there are additional travel costs either side of this, getting from Daraa across the border to Lebanon and then from Sydney to Canberra (approx $2000). Quarantine in Australia is an additional $6000.

This is a lot of money but it is totally achievable and will literally change people’s lives – a bigger impact that we can ever imagine. We raised almost $20000 in just a couple of months in 2019 to pay for visas. We can do it again.

Iyad wants his children to be safe and happy. Please donate whatever you can – even just a few dollars – to help achieve what most of us take for granted.

All donations are tax deductible.

Thank you so much.

**I am running this campaign on behalf of Iyad. He is still learning to speak English and we wrote this page together with the help of an Arabic translator. If you have any concerns about the legitimacy of his campaign please dont hesitate to get in touch and I can direct you to the refugee advocates who can vouch for us.

This campaign is supported and endorsed by Canberra Refugee Support, a wonderful charity providing assistance to asylum seekers and refugees in Canberra.

⭐ ABOUT IYAD AND HIS FAMILY ⭐

Iyad, a Syrian refugee living in Canberra, is one of the 12 million people (that’s almost half the population of Australia) displaced by the war that broke out in his country in 2011. Iyad is raising money to bring his wife and five children, currently trapped in Syria, to Australia. While it’s unlikely that you and I can influence foreign policy, we can help Iyad be with his family again.

Iyad’s dream is to settle with his family in Canberra. To work and contribute to our city, and to ensure his children get a good education and grow up to do the same.

Iyad has five children – two boys and three girls. He has never met his youngest child. Another daughter is still suffering from the injuries caused by the impact of bomb fragments hitting her in the face as she played outside her house. Currently living in the city of Daraa in southwestern Syria, Iyad’s wife must stay on the move to avoid hotspots as violence has broken out around the country.

Iyad’s children are still in Syria. He has never met his youngest daughter.

Iyad’s daughter was hit in the head by shrapnel from a bomb explosion. She is still recovering from her injuries.

Iyad is not able to return to Syria for his family. When the war broke out he refused to join the Syrian armed forces to fight against those opposed to the government. He will be arrested and likely executed if he returns.

The full story of Iyad and his family is far longer and more complex than the one written here. Most of us will never be able to understand what they have been though – however, it doesn’t take much to imagine the desperation and grief that Iyad feels in his family’s absence, or the terror and trauma experienced by his children.
