My name is Hammad Al-Akhras. I am the eldest man out of all my siblings and am the only one responsible for protecting and providing for my family, as my father has recently suffered from a heart attack.
We have lost everything we spent out life dedicated to building – the memories of our childhood home reduced to rubble; the home I worked so hard to obtain, destroyed before my eyes, along with all of my belongings that I have collected over the years; my job I have given much time, energy, and effort in creating my career, completely obliterated by the war; and the loss of our dreams and aspirations, the path we worked so hard to pave ripped away from us.
Now, and for the past 464 days, we live without the most basic of necessities like water, electricity, access to food — basic ingredients like flour inaccessible from the skyrocketing costs, and when we manage to obtain some food, it is unhealthy and often unclean, and we must stretch these limited ingredients as far as possible to feed all of my family members. My family consists of 9 members, including myself, with my father at the head of the household, who has been incapacitated from his heart attack, and has suffered from chronic heart disease from before the war.
I have watched my father’s health condition deteriorate significantly because of the tragedies we have faced, compounding these health issues and exacerbating the stress put on his heart. I worry deeply for my fathers health and life since his recent heart attack. My siblings and I watch over him from his hospital bed, worrying deeply for my fathers health and life since his recent heart attack, and the lifesaving operation he needs for his heart is expensive, and he must travel outside the country in order to receive the treatment.
I have two older sisters: Mona, who has been married to her husband for 10 years, and lost everything her and her husband built for themselves, including their house and all the memories they shared there, in the war, and now lives in a makeshift tent near us.
My second sister has two young children, Lian (5) and Lana (3). They are so young to have witnessed so much devastation, and are forced to bear the overwhelming weight of being displaced over, and over, and over again in their young lives. I wish to restore the innocence of childhood that all children deserve – to be free to play and laugh and for their needs to be nurtured and cared for.
My younger sister, Menna, is a university student – an experience that was torn away from my younger brother, Mohammad, who dreamed of learning more about the world; but now, his only dream is to survive this war. In the face of all of this – the loss, grief, and devastation wreaked by the occupation – Meena’s tuition must still be paid. The dedication to her education is a source of pride and hope for our family, and I do not wish for her to experience the deprivation of her education like my little brother. The only thing I want is to save my family.
You can help save my family.

Picture this: Your life has been turned upside down instantly; everything you have worked your whole life for — gone in an instant. Everything you once knew turned to rubble and destruction. Your home, where you grew up and created childhood memories with — gone. Your job, where you dedicated your energy and effort into building a career you loved — gone. The most basic necessities we take for granted — warmth, fresh air, the ability to move around freely and safely — ripped away from you.
These are only a few of the difficulties that Hammad and his family have been facing for over 464 days.
As you understand by now, there is only so much resilience the human body can endure, and the urgent need to do anything you can to save your family is the exact reason Hammad has allowed us the opportunity to help him and his family be freed from the immense suffering and stress they currently face. Even the smallest amount is so highly valuable in lifting a margin of stress from the weight of this tragedy off the shoulders of Hammad and his family. Your contributions to these lifesaving funds are invaluable.
